Therapy Resumes

It is important to properly compose a professional therapy resume when searching for a new career.  Resumes are designed to entice employers to interview candidates, as well as highlight a candidate’s needs, skills, and abilities in relation to specific careers.  Before organizing information, candidates should re-discover accumulated skills, accomplishments, and strengths by analyzing all past jobs and educational experiences.

Eighty-four percent of employers prefer chronological resumes, which organize data with the most recent experiences listed first.  They are the easiest to read, and often the easiest to compose.  It is important that font is legible, no smaller than ten point, and that the resume does not exceed two pages.  These documents should be easy to scan, and have ample space.  The most common chronological format is described as follows:

Identification:
Include name, address, telephone number, email address

Objective Statement:

  • Candidates should use this space to identify who they are and what they are looking for in a career.
  • Any pertinent skills or knowledge may be included here.
  • Remember to be brief; three to five sentences is plenty.

Educational Background:
This space is designated for schools in which degrees, diplomas, or any other higher form of education have been or will be obtained.  Include colleges and universities, location of school, and diploma or certification obtained.  High schools and transfer schools are not necessary unless some sort of achievement was obtained.

Employment History:

  • It is necessary to include all of a candidate’s most recent employers.
  • Employer company name, location, title, specific duties, positions, and achievements are to be incorporated.
  • Percentages, numerical values, dollar figures, and action verbs are excellent additions to showcase to prospective employers.

Optional Categories:
These sections may be included directly before or after employment history. Be sure to only include categories that are specific to the open position.

  • Certifications
  • Volunteer Work
  • Foreign Language Fluency
  • Military Service
  • Computer Skills
