DUTIES The incumbent conducts diagnostic evaluations with services such as Otolaryngology, Neurology, and Rehabilitation Medicine Services, for all types of communicatively impaired veterans seen by Audiology and Speech Pathology.  The incumbent’s caseload includes all hearing disorders without limitations as to severity or type, age, complications, medical and/or emotional/psychological history ranging from the simplest to the most difficult and complex pathologies.  The incumbent administers, scores, and interprets the findings of standard tests and thus has knowledge of the administration, scoring, and interpretation of specialized tests including electronystagmography (ENG), VNG, OAE, AEP, and central auditory tests in relation to mental, medical, physical, social, emotional, and educational data as well as in relation to the veteran’s difficulties in communication and determines the type and severity of hearing loss and site of lesion.  The incumbent is responsible for aiding in determining: the causative factors of hearing loss, appropriate procedures, and making recommendations regarding treatment, other referrals, and coordinating necessary subsequent actions.  The incumbent assumes full responsibility for planning and implementing remedial and rehabilitative programs for referred patients.  When appropriate, the incumbent will also be responsible for: implementing a hearing conversation program within the Medical Center, participate in the Hearing Orientation Program, conduct Compensation and Pension examinations, provide input into the hearing problems associated with neurological or surgical problems, selecting and fitting of hearing aids for eligible veterans, participating in clinical research, supervise extern placements, participate in the Quality Improvement Program, undertake continuing education activities, and other duties as assigned.  The incumbent may be required to provide coverage at other sites within the VA Maryland Health Care System.
