Job Title: Research Audiologist, GS-0665-14
Company: NIOSH
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Description:
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is the largest mining health and safety laboratory in the world. The laboratory was created in 1910 and has a long and distinguished history of producing advances in worker safety and health. PRL is located on the 180-acre Bruceton Research Center near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh is a modern metropolis that is rich in culture, history, sports, and education. Its unique geography consists of a hilly terrain, rivers, bridges, and tunnels, which provide scenic views among the numerous hiking and biking trails and parks. Pittsburgh has been described by The New York Times as “the only city in America with an entrance.” Pittsburgh is noted for an affordable, low cost of living and award-winning schools. It is no wonder that Pittsburgh is the only place to be ranked “America’s Most Livable City” twice. Some of the benefits at our suburban campus include a cafeteria, credit union, day care center, fitness facility, and free parking all conveniently located on site. PRL is currently looking for a Research Audiologist to lead laboratory and field research on hearing loss prevention for miners. The specific job will involve designing and leading research projects on worker-oriented methods to reduce noise exposure, increase effectiveness of hearing protection, and other approaches to reducing the risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Applicants should have experience in related areas such as hearing loss prevention program design, audiometric and noise measurement instrumentation and analysis, and occupational heath research design for field and laboratory studies. Experience in leading successful research teams is also highly desirable. PRL’s products have significantly contributed to the incredible improvements seen in the mining industry, reducing the annual number of fatalities from over 3,000 in 1910 to 57 in 2005. PRL is recognized internationally for its unique laboratories and test facilities and frequently is part of international collaborations to improve mineworker health and safety.
