Major Duties: The Audiologist has professional responsibility for cases that vary in degree of complexity.  This involves identifying, evaluating and remedying any type of auditory communicative disorder. The incumbent is responsible for overall analysis and synthesis of diagnostic information, dissemination of this information, and recommendation for other examinations.   The incumbent conducts audiological assessment; investigates the need for aural rehabilitation including speech reading, auditory training, and counseling, referral to psychological and vocational rehabilitation; and summarizes these findings in reports to appropriate sources.  Incumbent performs special audiologist procedures to aid specialists in detecting and evaluating hearing disorders which may be amenable to medical treatment or surgical intervention: vestibular dysfunction, Meniere's syndrome, otosclerosis, cerebellopontine tumors, central nervous system dysfunctions, and other retrocochlear syndromes.   Incumbent conducts hearing evaluations for compromised patients who may be unable to respond normally to test procedures, plans and develops patient treatment plans, conducts rehabilitative audiology programs, and provides professional counseling as needed.  Travel to VA Outpatient Clinics is required. Qualifications: GS-9: None beyond the basic requirements GS-11: Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower level; or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field. GS-12: In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. At the GS-9 and GS-11 level, the supervisor sets the overall objectives and resources available. The employee and supervisor in consultation develop deadlines, projects and work to be done. The employee plans and carries out the assignment. The employee keeps the supervisor informed of progress and potentially controversial matters.
