Job Description Position: Occupational Therapist Program: Early Intervention Qualifications: The Occupational Therapist must have a current licensure as a Registered Occupational Therapist in the State of Utah, pass a Background Criminal Investigation, have an acceptable driving record, and pass a TB test. This position requires the use of personal vehicle with continuous automobile insurance that meets state minimum insurance requirements. Credentialing from the State of Utah as an Early Intervention Specialist-2 is required within 2 years from date of hire. Some evening and weekend work is required. Communication Skills: The OT must be able to communicate in English in both written and verbal formats on a professional level. Some OT positions may require fluent conversational skills in Spanish as well as the ability to write in Spanish. Organization Skills: The OT must be proficient at organizing and managing work materials and a personal work schedule. Records must be kept up-to-date, including time sheets, service documentation, task checklists, caseload lists, and mileage logs. The OT must demonstrate attention to detail by filling out forms and maintaining other documentation completely and accurately. Collaboration Skills: The OT must perform effectively as a team member by following established policies and procedures, responding promptly to communications delivered through established channels, attending meetings and activities regularly and on time, meeting assigned deadlines, participating actively as a team member, and resolving problems or differences of opinion within the appropriate team context. Interpersonal Skills: The OT must be able to establish and maintain relationships of mutual respect and trust with client families, co-workers, and community partners. This includes: • Be a good listener by responding appropriately to both verbal and non-verbal communication cues • Convey information in a manner so as to be easily understood • Present personal point of view without offending or alienating others • Express oneself honestly, but in a manner that is also courteous, respectful and professional • Maintain confidentiality of information as appropriate Technological Skills: The OT must be proficient in using a PC to submit and maintain personal work records, send and receive internal and external e-mail communications, find and view materials in the curriculum database, and to compose and edit documents. Proficiency in accessing information in web-based formats, including the use of common internet search engines, is required. Play Skills and Knowledge of Child Development: The OT must be able to engage children in sustained positive play interactions at an age appropriate level. The OT must possess extensive knowledge of fine motor, oral motor (including feeding), gross motor, and sensory processing development in children birth-to-3 years of age, including typical developmental steps and how various disabilities may affect development. Also, a knowledge of age appropriate adaptive equipment. A general knowledge of all areas of development, including pre-speech and communication, cognitive, social-emotional, self-help, sensory and state regulation, and general health and nutrition is needed. The OT must be able to identify atypical development and risk factors (“red flags”) in both infants and toddlers. Effective Intervention: The OT must be able to implement an appropriate, basic array of developmental interventions with children 0-to-3 years old in all areas of development. As the in-house specialist in fine motor, oral motor, and sensory processing development, the OT must be able to implement more in-depth strategies of intervention in these areas. The OT must be able to effectively facilitate the parent-child relationship in a manner which is matched to parent learning styles and modes of interaction. Philosophical compatibility: The OT must be able to complete job tasks in a manner compatible with the following KOTM philosophy statements: • Optimum child development is achieved in the context of the child’s family relationships, especially with mother and father • Parents are the experts on their own child(ren) and should be full partners in decision making and program implementation • Developmental interventions are most effective when embedded in child and family daily routines and activities • Children with special needs of all ages should be fully included in the mainstream of community life • Positive change occurs when we build on people’s strengths, rather than magnify their needs • Services are most effective for families when tailored to meet individual needs and are provided through a collaborative team effort Physical demands: The OT must be able to travel around the community, negotiate stairs and uneven walking surfaces, and carry up to 50 pounds. S/he must be able to work at the computer for extended periods of time. In addition, s/he must be able to play actively with children on the floor and must endure some environmental health risks common to family homes, such as pets, second hand smoke, etc. In working with children and families, the OT will be exposed to some communicable illnesses. In addition, the OT may be required to maneuver heavy adaptive equipment. Essential Responsibilities: The OT may function as either the Primary Service Provider or a Specialist Service Provider. In either role, the OT: • Through collaboration with all team members, helps develop an IFSP which appropriately addresses the child and family concerns which the parents consider most important • Educates the parents on the child’s developmental status • Through reflective listening and communication, helps the parent gain skill and confidence in expressing their child’s strengths and needs • Using strategies to facilitate the parent-child relationship, implements the individual and group activities outlined on the IFSP in order to help families identify and carry out goals and strategies to enhance their child’s development • Uses approved curriculum to guide family and child learning • Conducts ongoing assessment in all areas of development (Primary Provider) or areas of specialty (Specialist Provider). • Brings child and family needs to the attention of the team for discussion and action Essential Tasks: 1. (D) Receive and respond appropriately to voice messages, e-mails, faxes, and mail. 2. (D) Update team members on child and family status through voice-mail, e-mail, team meetings, and other appropriate modes of communication. 3. (D) Update personal work calendar on the network. 4. (W) Accurately input hours worked on the electronic time card program. 5. (D) Maintain accurate caseload lists, appointment schedules, and Primary Provider tracking sheets. 6. (D) Conduct informal, ongoing child and family assessment. 7. (W) Conduct formal assessment of child and/or family, including correct administration, scoring, and interpretation of assessment tools as appropriate 8. (M) Participate in the assigned role in Transdisciplinary Playbased Assessments. 9. (W) Attend 6-month and annual IFSP meetings as needed. 10. (M) Formally consult with Service Providers and other specialists on your team regarding children on your caseload. 11. (D) Implement individual and group activities at home visits and in the center to teach families strategies that they can carry out to enhance their child’s development and make progress on goals on a day-to-day basis. 12.
