POSITION SUMMARY:  The Physical Therapist develops, coordinates and implements therapy programs for Children’s Care students/patients, and for children, adolescents and adults served at the Rehabilitation Center or outreach locations; develops assigned programs.   DIMENSIONS: Evaluates/Plans/Implements Therapy:                                        80% of the Work Period   Documents Progress Notes/Attends Meetings/ Program Development:                                                             20% of the Work Period   PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:  *1.      Develops and implements therapy programs for Children’s Care students/patients as part of a comprehensive healthcare/educational team, utilizing a family-centered approach.  Drives to local school districts, the Children’s Care Rehabilitation Center, homes, and other assigned outreach locations to perform evaluations and administer therapy to children, adolescents and adults.   *2.     Evaluates student/patient developmental needs in areas of: gross motor; sensorimotor; reflex development; seating/positioning; mobility; perceptual motor; spinal alignment; mobility; JROM; standardized tests/measurements; bracing/splinting; muscle tone/strength; and other areas as deemed appropriate.  Evaluates and participates in special programs/clinics as necessary (i.e. LE casting, powered mobility, spasticity & mobility, early development, and Spina Bifida).  Administers modalities as directed by the physician.   *3.     Evaluates and monitors conditions and maintenance of student/patient           assistive technology; recommending appropriate adjustments and improvements;             incorporates safety procedures; devices and equipment; and follows agency              infection control policies and procedures.   *4.     Works closely with parents/guardians and external agencies to discuss              therapy programs, individualized education or family service plans IEP’s,             IFSP’s) goals, progress, assistive technology and other recommendations, and              with physicians and primary nurses to meet the medical needs of individual              students/patients.   *5.    Documents therapy session information; prepares and updates therapy records             and agency documents.   *6.      Supervises, trains and evaluates daily work activities of student            Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants; supervises            PTA’s, aides, interns and direct care staff as needed.  Provides job           Shadowing experiences for pre-therapy students.   *7.      Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with healthcare              agencies, school districts, other external agencies, and with Children’s Care              employees.   *8.     Prepares and conducts training in-services and programs for staff and visitors, and provides leadership and support in specific areas of program development.  Trains and monitors daily work assignments of the department’s para-professional staff.   *9.    Performs related duties to include transporting and accompanying Patients/students to therapy-related  appointments or events, maintaining  orderliness of assigned therapy areas, identifying needs for requires equipment and supplies.   *10. Follows agency infection control policies and procedures.   *11. Satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required.     *Essential functions per ADA guidelines.   QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science degree as a Physical Therapist from an accredited school of Physical Therapy, and current licensure in the State of South Dakota is required.   Prior Physical Therapy experience working with pediatric patients is preferred.   PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires full range of body motion including the ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand and walk for extensive periods of time; push, pull and grasp items, finger dexterity, eye/hand coordination, and the ability to lift patients weighing up to 50 pounds, using proper body mechanics.  Requires corrected vision (including depth perception), and hearing to normal range.   WORKING CONDITIONS: Work may be performed in school district, day care, home, and therapeutic gym and pool environments.  This position has extensive personal contact with patients, family members, education staff, and other healthcare staff when assisting in the implementation of individual therapy programs. This position packs and unpacks vehicles with therapy supplies and equipment prior to driving to outreach therapy assignments.  This position is expected to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.   This position has been evaluated as a Level I in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA definition of Occupational Exposure to bloodborne pathogens).   Level I: Positions in this category are required to perform tasks which involve exposure to blood, potentially infectious body fluids, or hazardous waste.
