The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) performs patient care that is related to all respiratory therapeutic and diagnostic modalities in the Surgical ICU, Medical ICU, Medical Specialty Clinics, Ambulatory Care, Emergency Room and General Medical and Surgical Nursing care areas to include both critically ill/injured and non-critically ill/injured patients.  The RRT performs difficult respiratory procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, medication delivery, pulmonary hygiene, oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, bronchoscopes and other general therapeutic and diagnostic services for the care of patients with respiratory problems.  Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision and is able to participate with physicians and nurse other RRT's and CRT's in planning respiratory treatment with reliance on the individual's knowledge of the equipment.  Ability to document in the established electronic systems and complete all Respiratory service and patient care documentation, billing information, departmental statistics, and workload productivity information according to approved department standards and guidelines.  Ability to accurately enter verbal/telephone orders and scheduling and coordinating inpatient/outpatient appointments in accordance to established Medical Center guidelines. The RRT will attend all mandatory and annual reviews and takes responsibility to attend appropriate continuing education activities in respiratory therapy.  The incumbent will assist with appropriately orienting/training less experienced and/or new respiratory department staff.  The RRT demonstrates positive interpersonal skills in order to provide education to patients, family members, students and clinical staff in relation to various theories pertaining to the Cardiopulmonary system and therapeutic modalities.  In the absence of the Respiratory Supervisor, the incumbent will be assigned to act as the charge therapist.  Performs emergency and acute respiratory care procedures in accordance with facility policies, NBRC and American Heart Association guidelines outlined within the Basic Life Support certification (BLS).  Performs adjunct respiratory therapy duties and responsibilities during down time or during periods of fluctuating work load to include respiratory interventions within the inpatient areas as needed.
