Incumbent conducts and coordinates all aspects of diagnostic assessments and evaluations and therapeutic and rehabilitative services for speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive, and swallowing disorders, but the emphasis will be for assistive technology including advance alternative/augmentative communication systems (including alternate access modes/switches), cognitive aids such as PDAs and alarm watches, language aids such as text-to-speech and speech-to-text software, and other devices such as voice amplifiers or fluency aids. Qualifications:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship - Citizen of the United States. Non-citizen may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates.
Education - A master's degree or its equivalent in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, or directly related field from an accredited college or university. “Accredited” means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and a speech-language pathology academic program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Licensure - For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. A staff S-LP who fails to obtain licensure within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard will be terminated.
Note: The S-LP must maintain full, current, and unrestricted licensure/registration.
Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for S-LP licensure may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate S-LP.
Loss of Credential - An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may result in termination of employment.
Physical Requirements - Candidates selected for employment will be required to pass a physical examination.
English Language Proficiency – Speech Language Pathologist must be proficient in spoken and written English.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Education and Experience.
GS-11: Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an Speech Language Pathologist equivalent to the next lower grade level, 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree, or doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, or a directly related field.
GS-12: In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice speech-language pathology.
Verification of Education: To qualify based on education, or where education is a minimum requirement, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or list of courses with credit hours, majors, and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcript materials will not be returned. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement). Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
