Current or pending state license in practicing state
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in speech language pathology
Valid certificate of clinical competence (CCC) or completing clinical fellowship (CF)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Speech Language Pathologist develops, coordinates and implements therapy programs for Children’s Care students/patients, and for children, adolescents and adults served at the Rehabilitation Center or outreach locations; develops assigned programs. DIMENSIONS: Evaluates/Plans/Implements Therapy: 80% of the Work Period Documents Progress Notes/Attends Meetings/Program Development: 20% of the Work Period PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: *1. Develops and implements therapy programs for Children’s Care students/patients as part of a comprehensive healthcare educational team, utilizing a family-centered approach. Drives to local school districts, the Children’s Care Rehabilitation Center, homes, and other assigned outreach locations to perform evaluations and administer therapy to children, adolescents and adults. *2. Evaluates student/patient developmental needs in areas of: oral motor development, articulation, phonology, auditory acuity, auditory perception, expressive and receptive language skills, pragmatic skills, augmentative communication, cognitive communication, feeding and swallowing. *3. Evaluates and monitors conditions and maintenance of student/patient assistive technology recommending appropriate adjustments and improvements; incorporates safety procedures, devices and equipment; follows agency infection control policies and procedures. *4. Works closely with parents/guardians and external agencies to discuss therapy programs, individualized education or family service plans (IEP’s, IFSP’s) goals, progress, assistive technology and other recommendations, and with physicians and primary nurses to meet the medical needs of individual students/patients. *5. Documents therapy session information; prepares and updates therapy records and agency documents. *6. Supervises, trains and evaluates daily work activities of student therapists, CFY candidates and direct care staff as needed. Provides job shadow experiences for pre-therapy students. *7. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with Children’s Care employees, healthcare agencies, school districts and other external agencies. *8. Prepares and conducts training in-services and programs for staff and visitors, and provides leadership and support in specific areas of program development as assigned. *9. Satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required. *10. Performs related duties to include transporting and accompanying patients/students to therapy-related appointments or events, maintaining orderliness of assigned therapy areas, identifying needs for required equipment and supplies. *11. Follows agency infection control policies and procedures. *Essential functions per ADA guidelines. QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree as a Speech and Language Pathologist from an accredited school of Speech Language Pathology program, Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) or eligible to enter Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY), eligible for a South Dakota Teaching Certificate; and a valid South Dakota driver’s license is required. Prior Speech Therapy experience working with pediatric patients is preferred. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires full range of body motion including the ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand and walk for extensive periods of time; push, pull and grasp items, finger dexterity, eye/hand coordination, and the ability to assist in lifting patients weighing up to 50 pounds, using proper body mechanics. Requires corrected vision (including depth perception), and hearing to normal range. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work may be performed in a therapy environment, school district, day care, and home. This position has extensive personal contact with patients, family members, education staff, and other healthcare staff when assisting in the implementation of individual therapy programs. This position packs and unpacks vehicles with therapy supplies and equipment prior to driving to outreach therapy assignments. This position has been evaluated as a Level I in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA definition of Occupational Exposure to bloodborne pathogens). Level I: Positions in this category are required to perform tasks which involve exposure to blood, potentially infectious body fluids, or hazardous waste.
