Provides general assistance and support to assigned recreation programs and activities; performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class carries out prearranged recreational programs and activities; sets up and issues equipment for recreational activities; assists in providing on-site supervision of participants in recreation programs and activities; aids in the creation of new recreation opportunities; and performs a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of recreation programs. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Director and the Recreation Supervisor.

- Provides general assistance within an assigned recreation program, including but not limited to preschool, sports, special events, after school programs, day camps, arts and crafts, or other recreation programs
- Encourages participation in activities and promotes good sportsmanship
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous and timely manner
- Sets up for program activities and serves as an on-site assistant
- Maintains cleanliness and safety of facilities and equipment; including, but not limited to, cleaning restrooms, emptying trash cans, and picking up litter
- Performs unskilled clerical work and other duties related to conducting programs
- Sets up, organizes equipment needed for specific programs, and monitors use
- Observes and/or participates in assigned activities as directed
- Reports risk, hazards, near misses, unsafe situations, incidents and accidents to supervisor
- Assists in maintaining order and compliance with established rules
- Provides routine information on facility rules and division activities to participants and the general public
- Maintains and secures facilities for programs
- May serve as scorekeeper and/or official for recreational games
- Supervises Recreation Center during rentals and programs
- Performs related duties as required
- Some knowledge of operations, services, and activities of recreation programs
- Some knowledge of recreational activities and programs including the techniques, rules, and equipment used in various sports, games, competitive group games and sporting events, and special events
- Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment and relating to the safety of participants
- Significant tact required in dealing effectively with the public
- Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification
- Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants of all ages, and the general public
- Ability to operate basic office machines, including but not limited to a telephone and copy machine
- Ability to understand and respond to the public and to staff requests for assistance both on the telephone and in person
- Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to accurately observe sporting events, record scores, and to distinguish between colors
- Education must be at a level that provides the ability to read, write, and understand instructions; experience working with children in a recreation setting, including arts, crafts, games, and activities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Drivers License preferred
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred
- Position requires working flexible hours on weekends, evenings, and holidays
