SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST
Credentials: State Certified Speech Pathologist and Certificate of Clinical Competence, or SLPA license
Education: Master's Degree and graduate training in Speech Language Pathology preferred
Reports to: Director of Special Services
Job Goal: Performs professional level duties under minimal supervision to assess/determine the most
appropriate instruction, assist in the determination of eligibility for special education placement, consultation
with teachers and direct therapy to students. The goal is to improve or maintain the student's
speech/language functioning to facilitate optimal learning through the identification, evaluation and treatment
of speech language problems.
An incumbent in this position will utilize discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment. Since there may be
several ways to solve a problem, an incumbent is free to choose the most appropriate solution in conjunction
with other members of the Individual Education Program (IEP) team.
Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has regular contact by telephone or in person with staff,
medical community, and public to determine the actual information needed; interprets and translates facts and
information; explains situations and issues; identifies alternative courses of action; and maintains
confidentiality of sensitive information. Requires tact and diplomacy and independent judgment such as
problem solving; making formal presentations; interpreting policies and procedures based on experience;
providing direct therapy as appropriate. Maintains confidentiality of all information.
Performance Measures: Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills to
work with the school, families of students and medical professionals. It requires following safety guidelines and
policies in order that students and others including self are protected from accident or injury. It requires
following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habit concerns.
Creativity, initiative, and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Assist in the identification and initial referral of Speech Language Impaired children. Performs Speech
Language assessments.
2. Participates in comprehensive staffing. Coordinates the information flow from the department to other
appropriate service providers.
3. Discharges liason services to receiving school districts or treatment facilities.
4. Prepares comprehensive speech language results.
5. Makes recommendations for intervention. Attends categorical eligibility meetings, which involves
presentation of evaluation results.
6. Consults and instructs school personnel and parents in the therapeutic management of students.
7. Consults with physicians, hospitals, and other medical personnel regarding the needs of speech language
impaired children.
8. Maintains confidential records. Provides documentation of progress and prepares evaluations.
9. Provides formal/informal in-service to administrators, parents and teachers.
10. Travels to the various sites to provide services.
11. Attends necessary workshops and continuing education to maintain certification.
12. Writes and implements IEP's
13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions: Must possess manual dexteri/visual ability
to operate vehicle and other testing devices. Must be able to read test protocols and observe student behavior.
Must be able to handle potentially hostile and unpredictable violent children. Employee must possess
hearing/speaking ability to communicate with staff, patients, etc.
