Job Summary

The Physical Therapy Assistant monitors and implements programs according to treatment plans established by the Physical Therapist. They will assist with evaluations and observations including case review, data collection and coordination of schedules with teachers. They will adapt equipment and assist in writing recommendations. They are involved with assisting students with access to the school environment. They will consistently develop alternatives to increase function. Pediatric experience is preferred. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.

Essential Functions

Works with the District Physical Therapist to provide gross motor services to special needs students who qualify for services.

Assists and guides staff in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified gross motor delayed students.

Provides screening to identify gross motor delayed children at regular intervals and at specified levels.

Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.

Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy coordinating with the physical therapist to meet individual students' needs and correct existing gross motor delays.

Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.

Provides information, and support to parents and families when appropriate.

Required Education and Qualifications

Associates degree

Must be licensed as a Physical Therapist Assistant with the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL).

Required Prior Experience

Pediatric or Neurological Experience Preferred.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Basic reading, writing, and math skills.

Ability to interact positively with students, supervisors, and others.

Ability to assist students in a variety of situations that may arise.

Assigned Decision Making

Works under the direction of a Licensed Physical Therapist and will collaborate with the PT regarding motor programs. Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned by the classroom teacher and related service professionals. Must take directions well and be able to work within specific guidelines. Makes suggestions but must be willing to follow directions. Concerns for safety of self and others.

Interactions with Others

Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervision of students being supported.

Budget Responsibility

None.

Working Environment

Work setting is primarily in the classroom setting. May be asked to work inside and outside the building to accomplish assigned tasks; working conditions can be in hot and cold weather.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and/or hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time.

Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
