Description
The Patient Care Coordinator works closely with the patients, physicians, and clinic management team to coordinate appointments and services for the patient(s). Additionally, this position requires working patiently, efficiently, and accurately in order to ensure a positive patient experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures that all patients are greeted in a friendly and professional manner.
- Ensures the appropriate demographic insurance information are properly entered into NextGen practice management system.
- Completes and manages the task list from the Call Center regarding patient inquiries.
- Completes and manages the task list from physicians, and follows up with the patient(s) as needed.
- Answers inquiries by telephone.
- Ensures that the patient's insurance has been verified and any necessary referrals and/or authorizations are obtained.
- Assists patient(s) with coordinating appointments and services outside of Wills.
- Completes pre-certification of required testing and procedures in a timely manner. Provides patients with authorization information to ensure proper continuation of care.
- Supports physicians to ensure all patient needs are met.
- Makes appropriate appointments for the patient by carefully reviewing the physician's instructions on when and where to follow-up.
- Understands the check-in and check-out process, and has the ability to assist with registration, as needed.
- Understands insurance terminology and educates patients on insurance challenges and alerts patients to the need for referrals, etc.
- Uses good judgment and initiative, communicates effectively and adapts to variations in workloads, assignments and interpersonal situations as needed.
- Respects and protects the patients' rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes, which are in the patients' best interest with full consideration of their legal rights;
- Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, management, and functions as an effective team member.
Educational requirements:
- HS diploma or equivalent required. Bachelors degree preferred.
Experience:
- Requires strong patient service skills, strong communication and writing skills, and strong computer skills.
- 3-5 years medical practice experience preferred.
- Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette; acts as an escort to any patient or family member needing directions; shows sensitivity to differences of culture; demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients / families/ colleagues perceive interactions as positive and supportive.
- Individual must be comfortable interacting with patients, management, and physicians on a regular basis.
- Individual must demonstrate strong interest in understanding the operational flow and in using critical thinking skills to service the patients needs each day.
