Department: Respiratory Therapy
Shift/Schedule: Contingent (Works as needed)
GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Therapy. The Respiratory Therapist Intern's primary job function is to provide high quality respiratory care delivery to the SOMC patient population in accordance with hospital policy. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
• Currently enrolled in a CoARC-approved program in Respiratory Care required.
Licensure:
• RCP(LTD) required
• BLS/with re-certification every two years required.
• BLS within 90 days of hire required
Experience:
• Work and/or educational experience that promoted group/ team working relations is preferred.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Delivers medical gas administration through various types of devices
2. Administers humidification, aerosols and aerosolized medications
3. Performs postural drainage and chest physical therapy
4. Delivers hyperinflation therapy (i.e., IPPB, IS)
5. Collects and reports patient information as an aid to planning of respiratory treatment programs
6. Obtains sputum samples (spontaneous cough only) and documents as appropriate
7. Conducts peak flow assessments
8. Demonstrates for patient education the use of home treatment systems (i.e., Peak Flow, Spacer)
9. Performs pre-cleaning, decontamination, and transports instruments that have been used on patients appropriately.
