1. Education and Training:

* Bachelor's Degree:

A bachelor's degree in a related field like Communication Sciences and Disorders is generally recommended, but not always required.

* Master's Degree:

A Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) or equivalent is the standard degree for becoming an SLP.

* Clinical Fellowship:

This is a required 36-week supervised clinical experience after completing the master's degree.

* Clinical Practicum:

A minimum of 400 hours of supervised clinical experience, including both observation and direct client contact, is typically required within the graduate program.

2. Examinations and Certification:

* Praxis Exam: Pass the Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology.

* ASHA Certification (CCC-SLP): Complete the required clinical fellowship, earn a master's degree from an accredited program, and pass the Praxis exam to qualify for ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).

3. State Licensure:

* State Licensure: All states require SLPs to be licensed. Licensure requirements vary by state but typically include a master's degree, supervised clinical experience, and a passing score on an exam. Some states may also require additional jurisprudence exams.

4. Continuing Education:

* Continuing Education: ASHA and many states require SLPs to participate in continuing education throughout their careers to maintain their certification and licensure.
