Utilizes a comprehensive evaluation based on accepted professional standards to assess patient needs and functional status. Devise and implement appropriate treatment plans to promote the highest level of patient self-sufficiency. Regularly re-assess plan efficacy, provide appropriate education to patients and families and progress patients toward goals and outcomes that reflect improved independence.

SUMMARY:

Functions as a leader within the organization by establishing a climate of mutual trust, supporting an innovative and motivating environment. Manages the day to day operations of the Respiratory Department, ensures evidence-based patient centered practice is provided and supports the hospital’s mission and vision.

Provides direct clinical care as RCP when the urgency of the situation dictates. Stays abreast of current evidence-based practice. Maintains personal and professional development to ensure competency.

Monitors care provided by staff and ensures that therapy and interventions are evidence based best practice.

Demonstrates clinical judgement and decision making by the ability to assess static and dynamic situations and applying evidence based solutions. Exhibits clinical judgment through problem-solving techniques and effective time management.

Manage day to day operations including: Establish assignments for shift. Redistributes workload as needed based on assessment of workload and acuity. Addresses issues involving patient care, patient needs, equipment and supplies and communicates needs and updates with department leadership. Address and communicate all schedule changes Assist with patient education or discharge orders or supplies as needed. Address equipment and departmental concerns utilizing work order systems as needed. Communicate issues, concerns, needs or changes with the Manager or Director of Respiratory Services.

Assist with audits and collection of department metrics and outcomes.

Initiates and supports performance improvement and other initiatives.

Develop, schedule and complete yearly staff competencies as needed. Oversee the competency process for clinical ladder participants. Maintain documentation of yearly staff competencies

Blood Gas Laboratory oversight.

Coordinate and oversee all aspects of employee orientation process. Ensures appropriate standards of care are maintained within Respiratory Care practice provided.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree (A.S.) from accredited college or university; Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Care or health related field with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience with strong intubation skills.

Certification and registration by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy. Must hold current license in the State of Connecticut and be certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) in CPR, ACLS.

Competent in performing Basic Life Support and Foreign Body Airway Management on adults. Able to provide care to adolescents through geriatric patient populations. Ability to draw and analyze ABG's.

Directly supervises FTE and multiple per diem employees in the Respiratory Care Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Department on-call rotation for emergencies and sick calls. Other supervisory responsibilities may include but are not limited to, payroll, covering for the director in his/ hers absence.

Computer experience preferred. Experience with Microsoft office suite preferred.
