Recreational Therapist

Schedule: 10 hours shifts, 4 days per week. Will include some weekends.

Key Functions

Clinical

  • Assess residents recreational-based treatment needs through direct observation, tests, and interviews with other healthcare professionals.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate recreational activities, functional leisure skills, and leisure education to address identified needs.
  • Consult with the treatment team regarding therapeutic recreation goals for the program.
  • Report progress to the treatment team.
  • Educate residents on social skills needed to become or remain independent.
  • Educate residents on coping skills to manage emotional problems.
  • Record and analyze residents' progress towards identified goals.
  • Plan and implement appropriate recreational activities for residents by the guidelines set by the organization, residential program, and profession.
  • The recreational therapist will work closely with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate direct care.

Programmatic

  • Recommend, develop, plan, and implement recreational and holiday activities and special events; work with staff, volunteers, and members of the public to meet the needs.
  • Plan and organize groups, 1:1 and co-treatment sessions, and community outings
  • Serve as an educator on community resources in the individual area.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinates exercise groups (yoga, fitness training, aerobic classes)
  • Plans and implements small recreational therapy activities, special events, and entertainment.
  • Work closely with unit staff to plan a monthly calendar of events.

Institutional service and professional development

  • Perform administrative and committee duties consistent with assigned roles
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through in-service training, supervision, workshops, and other educational activities

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation.

In lieu of bachelor’s degree, associate degree combined with work experience may be acceptable.

License/Certification: NCTRC certification (within one year of employment), CPR certified

Preferred: Certified athletic trainer, yoga certifications, aerobics instructor

Experience: 1-year clinical experience preferred
