Located in an idyllic setting in the northernmost corner of Fairfield County,
Connecticut. Sherman School is a small, PK-8 school with approximately 250 students and 80 dedicated faculty and staff members. We offer small class sizes, and wonderful resources to support our programs.

TITLE: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST 0.5 FTE

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Connecticut Health Certification as an Occupational Therapist
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written or oral format.
  • Ability to use personal computer applications such as word processing, spread sheets, etc.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally be required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee may occasionally lift up to 20 pounds of treatment materials or move up to 50 pounds of treatment equipment. The employee will also be expected to physically assist the student during treatment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

JOB GOAL: Responsible for occupational therapy casework in a program designed to meet the needs of individuals in the school population who are identified through the PPT process. Evaluates, plans, and provides occupational therapy treatment to students in accordance with the recommendations from the Planning & Placement Team or 504 Team.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs consultation and evaluation for students referred to the program.
  • Provides therapy and support in the classroom, when appropriate.
  • Develops school-based goals, treatment objectives and therapeutic activities and tasks to be incorporated into the students individualized education plan or 504 Plan.
  • Implements pediatric occupational therapy.
  • Maintains written case notes and other written documentation as required by school policy or by state law.
  • Attends and participates in staff conferences on students needs and progress.
  • Communicates with teachers, classroom support staff, physicians, and other staff with student contact to ascertain progress or additional needs.
  • Assesses and makes recommendations regarding adaptive equipment needs and monitors equipment status.
  • The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students during the therapy session.
  • Must be able to meet multiple demands from several people.
