Speech and Language Pathologist

SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTReports to:Principal, Director of Pupil ServicesResponsibilities: To assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication disorders that interfere with the individual students ability to derive full benefit from the districts educational program. A Speech-Language Pathologist is a specialist in normal speech and language development as well as speech and language disorders.Essential Functions:identifies students with speech and language impairmentsconducts evaluations of speech and/or language disorders, including voice, hearing, fluency, pragmatic and receptive and expressive language impairmentsprovides appropriate therapeutic programs to meet individual needs of speech, language, and hearing impaired studentsprovides guidance and consultation services to parents and pertinent staff members for extension of learned skills beyond therapy sessionsserves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral and/or assisted communication and speech improvementassists in the proper referrals of individuals with communicative impairments to agencies and specialists in the community, as appropriateassists in the development of curriculum guides and local policies as related to speech and language impairmentsmaintains efficient records including the preparation of reports as required by local and district policycompiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history and environmental history are deemed appropriaterequests and maintains needed equipment and supplies performs other duties, as assignedAbility to:communicate effectively with teachers, students, administration, parents/guardians, doctors, and other professionals in the community who are involved with the students solve practical problems with students and staffunderstand and carry out oral and written directionsidentify, analyze, solve and organize work to meet deadlines provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and other staff members in a helpful, courteous and timely mannermaintain cooperative and productive working relationship when dealing with students and staff Knowledge of:all areas of speech, language and aural rehabilitation augmentative and alternative communication, assistive technologieseffective use of computer and relevant educational software applicationsinterpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesyQualifications:evidence of ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.Education:Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited college or universityMassachusetts license in Speech-Language PathologyCertificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)ASHA membership (must be renewed annually)
