The Oregon Department of Corrections has an exciting opportunity for an Activities Coordinator at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Oregon. This position is 4 day/10hr shift work week, Tuesday through Friday. The standard working hours are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, although these hours are flexibles as candidates will be required to work some evenings and weekends for special events. This position is represented by Association of Oregon Corrections Employees (AOCE). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

About the Job Your Role

This position is responsible for designing, coordinating, implementing, and supervising large, multi-program recreation therapy and leisure activities within a secured facility. These specialized recreational programs are goal-oriented and directed toward rehabilitation and the skill acquisition of physical skills, socially acceptable behaviors and affiliations. These programs serve as a vehicle within the Correctional Department to help assess the potential for offender transition into the community. Activities may include but are not limited to music programs, cognitive classes, cultural-related events, wellness programs, art projects, self enhancement programs, etc. The programs chosen are more complex and designed to challenge the participants to think about different ways of working through things so they can apply these skills and abilities in their life after they leave the Department of Corrections. This position works in conjunction with security and transition staff in making decisions with respect to security issues for individual AICs in support of the OAM and in keeping with ODOC policy, procedure, and administrative rule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience assessing, developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities; OR
  • A bachelor's degree in Recreational Management, Physical Education or a related field.

Working Conditions

These positions work inside an adult correctional facility and may encounter angry, hostile or abusive Adult in Custody (AIC), which could result in personal injury, death or becoming a hostage. You are responsible for handling AIC incidents in the immediate work area as well as preventing escapes by proper control of keys, tools, equipment, and other potential contraband. You are required to report and document unusual incidents.

This position may require extensive standing and/or walking, both indoors and outdoors, possibly during inclement weather and may require some travel by motor vehicle for coordination with community volunteers and collection of donations. You must be able to lift or push a cart with a load in it. You must have a valid drivers license and a good driving record or an acceptable alternate means of transportation. You are subjected to be called back in the event of an emergency and may be re-assigned to any position as needed.
