About the Position

This position is with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind. The Rehabilitation Specialist I coordinates services for consumers with blindness or visual impairments. Employees in this position evaluate the vocational potential of consumers while utilizing available diagnostics in determining eligibility for services. The Rehabilitation Specialist jointly develops an individualized rehabilitation plan with the consumer; arranges, coordinates, and supervises the services necessary to reach a vocational goal; provides job placement services to eligible, qualified job ready individuals; establishes relationships with medical personnel; and performs all duties of a Rehabilitation Specialist I. Duties also include organizing and coordinating community resources to ensure quality rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities. The Rehabilitation Specialist I duties include, but not limited to: Meets with consumer for the application process and provides pertinent information about the rehabilitation process. Determines consumer eligibility for rehabilitation services. Locates and utilizes all available resources as needed in each client's rehabilitation program. Manages, under supervision, fiscal allocations provided by agency for use in the provision of vocational rehabilitation services. Develops individualized rehabilitation plans and/or services and manages the consumers program until completion of the process. Develops and maintains a close working relationship with medical professionals and other community organizations/groups. Ensures timely services to consumers through proper caseload management and organization.

What you'll need to be Successful

Knowledge of counseling techniques, vocational assessment, job placement and interviewing techniques, and community resources. Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software. Excellent communication, creativity, problem-solving, evaluation of services and time management skills; Ability to be flexible, handle multiple tasks, maintain a professional demeanor, and showempathy; A willingness to obtain necessary continuing training/education for Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) certification maintenance; or if not a CRC certificate holder, a willingness to work toward becoming eligible to sit for the CRC examination. Additional duties: Oversees the work of staff by making and reviewing work assignments, establishing priorities, coordinating activities, and resolving related work problems.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically requires a bachelor's degree and 0-2 years of experience. Hiring agency preferred qualifications: Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling or closely related area per federal regulations, and/or Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) certification. In lieu of a Master's Degree or CRC, a Bachelor's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling or closely related area per federal regulations with course content that emphasized rehabilitation, counseling, disability, therapy, health, employment, wellness, or human development, and one (1) year experience as demonstrated through paid or unpaid employment in vocational rehabilitation or closely related field.
