MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Planning:

  • Establishes program goals within the special education program for children with communicative handicaps.
  • Makes necessary physical arrangements at the site for program implementation.
  • Arranges suitable schedule for speech and language screening.
  • Establishes a record-keeping system for maintaining student records in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.

Program Implementation:

  • Screens students to determine those who may need speech and language therapy services.
  • Obtains permission for appropriate diagnostic testing; administers those tests.
  • Conducts conferences with parents, school personnel and other professional personnel to acquire necessary information for complete appraisal of students' communicative abilities and needs.
  • Participates in the writing of each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Exchanges pertinent information with teachers regarding children who will be scheduled for speech and language therapy.
  • Schedules students for speech and language therapy; provides speech and language therapy as scheduled.
  • Offers suggestions for teacher consideration of speech and language activities which might be beneficial for children exhibiting communicative handicaps.
  • Makes referrals to school personnel and other professional personnel when applicable.
  • Arranges for necessary materials and equipment for therapy activities.
  • Keeps student records in accordance with the regulations of the District, County, State and Federal regulations.
  • Insures that total program is in accord with local district policy.

Performance Evaluation:

  • Administers applicable diagnostic test to determine whether students' needs have been met: i.e., IEP goals and objectives of speech and language therapy.
  • If therapy goals and objectives are not achieved, implement, alternate program(s) or makes appropriate referrals.
  • Dismisses students when communicative needs have been met; reevaluates periodically.
  • Makes complete report on each student for necessary files.

Professional Growth:

  • Attends professional conferences, workshops and advanced courses in communications and allied professional fields.
  • Reads current journals and literature in communications and allied professional fields.
  • Reviews new materials and equipment.
  • Actively participates in local, state and national professional speech and hearing organizations.

Other Duties:

  • The speech and language specialist attends local school meetings when requested and scheduled professional staff meetings. He or she also speaks to professional, parent and

community groups as requested. A summary report of the total year's program is prepared and submitted to the Coordinator.

  • The speech and language specialist performs any other duties as assigned by the Principal in accordance with district procedures and policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Credentials:

  • Appropriate California credential(s) for providing speech and language therapy services.

Experience:

  • Preferably one year in professional speech and language therapy services.

Personal and Professional Qualifications:

  • Ability to relate positively to children and instill in them a desire to improve.
  • Ability to relate positively to parents, school personnel and other lay and professional people.
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner; present a favorable personal appearance; and demonstrate personality characteristics which enhance effectiveness in a school setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, with a pleasant voice and correct articulation; use appropriate, professional language skills in writing and speaking.
  • Demonstrate positive attitude and desire to improve professional knowledge and competence.
