SUMMARY The Occupational Therapist evaluates patients and plans and implements an effective occupational therapy program based upon physical assessment, sound judgement and psychological sensitivity. Maintains a high level of professional expertise and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reviews patient's condition and medical records to determine appropriate course of treatment. Tests and measures patient's function to include but is not limited to: strength, motion, motor development, sensory perception, coordination, sensation, and cognition, and records findings to develop or revise treatment plans/programs. Establishes a written plan of care which includes patient and family involvement in determining realistic, specific, functional and measurable goals. Confers with other members of the health care team to obtain additional patient information and to integrate physical therapy treatment with other aspects of patient's health care. Performs and integrates examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and intervention to maximize patient outcomes. Administers interventions to include: Therapeutic exercise. Neuromuscular Re-education Functional retraining in self cares, ADLs, home management, community and work. Sensory integration. Manual therapy techniques. Prescribes, applies, adjusts, and fabricates devices and equipment. Cognitive re-training. Electrotherapeutic modalities, physical agents Provides adaptive equipment education/instruction and resources. Instructs, motivates and assists patient and family members in treatment plan and home program and provides written direction when necessary. Demonstrates the ability to instruct, supervise and delegate appropriate patient care activities/treatment to support personnel as needed. Records treatment, response, and progress in patient's chart or enters information into computer, according to department guidelines. Establishes an early discharge plan involving patient, family and other appropriate services which may include written instructions and recommendations. Recognizes when patient's treatment plan requires modification, discontinuation or patient referral based on goals established and rehab potential. Performs reassessments and discharges in a timely manner. Responsible for continued professional growth by completing at least 2 courses per year in the web-based educational program in addition to all other assigned courses. Participates in meetings and in-services. Appropriately delegates, orients, instructs, and directs work activities of assistants, aides, support staff and students. Participates in QA/PI activities to ensure improved quality of patient care. Treats within scope of practice, abides by State Practice Act guidelines, and follows ethical/legal standards of practice per AOTA guidelines. May provide occupational therapy outside of Welia facilities under specific circumstances. Assists the Director of Rehabilitation Services in efficient operation of the department, such as updating policies/procedures and forms. Supports the policies and procedures of the hospital and the standards of JCAHO as required for full accreditation. Supports JCAHO objectives. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Masters Degree or Bachelors Degree from accredited school of occupational therapy. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Current MN Occupational Therapist license. BLS certification. Specialty groups designed to serve specific diagnosis groups may require further certification and/or education.
