The Licensed Recreational Therapist position offers an opportunity to work at the DSB Career and Training Center (CTC) in Raleigh with adults of all ages as well as teens as young as 14 years of age during a summer program. The primary purpose of the position is to provide individualized comprehensive assessments for people who are blind, deafblind and visually impaired who are referred to the Center by Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors from offices around the state. In collaboration with the participant, the LRT develops and implements individualized goals and interventions for eligible participants. This position also plans a wide range of activities for groups. Individual and group programming includes activities for leisure education, adaptive exercise, social skills, problem solving, coping skills, adventure/challenge programs, sports and recreation skills, and initiatives.

Individual and group programming revolves around developing activities for leisure education, adaptive exercise, social skills, problem solving, coping skills, adventure/challenge programs, sports and recreation skills, and initiatives. This Licensed Recreational Therapist (LRT) position is a 2nd shift position, Sunday to Thursday with work hours of 2pm to 10:30pm. As a 2nd shift position, the position is eligible for differential pay. Working additional hours or shifts are occasionally needed. The Center is closed for all state holidays and has planning days a few times a year during breaks between programming. Duties are carried out with considerable independence while operating within Division policies and guidelines.

Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide instruction in Leisure Education and Therapeutic Recreation areas which enables participants to achieve their independent living and vocational employment goals. Examples of

  • Apply expertise in the field of therapeutic recreation, the LRT develops individualized plans to improve awareness of community resources, independence, overall health and well-being and promotes an improved quality of life.

  • Develop comprehensive recreational therapy programs that incorporate assessment tools, progress notes, and evaluation forms.

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate quality general recreation programs and services based on individual assessment of needs, interests and abilities.

  • Provide written and verbal reports to interdisciplinary teams.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with participants, interdisciplinary team members, vendors and community organizations.

  • Assist participants with learning technology to access resources in their communities.

  • Skilled in planning, coordinating, and implementing group-based activities tailored to diverse populations and program objectives.

Management preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) preferred.
  • Willingness and availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or additional shifts as needed.
  • Possession of a valid lifeguard certification is desirable.
