Job Summary

Performs specific treatments and groups to the young adult through geriatric population as delegated by the primary physical therapists or physical therapy assistant. Functions only under the supervision of either a therapist or physical therapy assistant. Acts as a resource for new Physical Therapy Technicians.
Exercise physiologists may develop, implement and monitor activity/exercise sessions for cardiopulmonary patients, including post op cardiac surgery patients, within the limits of exercise tolerance.

Qualifications

Essential Functions

-Provides direct patient care only under the supervision and as delegated by the physical therapist or physical therapy assistant.
-Maintains medical records, ensuring thorough documentation according to departmental standards.
-Assists registered therapists with patient care, following prescribed delegations.
-Participates in staff meetings as indicated.
-Provides patient care that requires considerable physical effort.
-Provides supportive duties as assigned, i.e., gym and equipment cleaning, etc.
-Represents the department at various hospital and community programs and activities.
-Exhibits courtesy, compassion, and respect to patients, families, visitors, physicians and co-workers.
-Participates in Quality Improvement activities.
-Responsible for service and operational excellence of all assigned department activities to ensure the delivery of quality services and/or outcomes to meet or exceed the expectations of those utilizing or impacted by the department.

-Understands the developmental needs of the young adult through geriatric populations.
-If an exercise physiologist:
-Develops an individual activity/exercise program in collaboration with Physical Therapy for cardiopulmonary patients within the limits of exercise tolerance.
-Monitors patients physiologic signs during activity/exercise; takes and records vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, and oximetry) and activity achieved.
-Recognizes distress signs and takes appropriate action.
-Assumes responsibility for patient and family education for the cardiopulmonary patient, relating to therapeutic exercise, self-monitoring and behavioral interventions.
-Reviews current literature and research to update and revise educational component.
-Evaluates the activity/exercise component of patient treatment plan, i.e., self-monitoring, proficiency, vital signs, target heart rate and revises as appropriate.
-Contributes at Team Meetings for the cardiopulmonary patient.
-On discharge, provides patients with individualized home exercise program and ensures comprehension of instructions.

Education
Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required and Other Certificate/Diploma Exercise Physiology preferred or Bachelor's Degree Exercise Physiology preferred

Licenses and Credentials

Experience
Prior experience in physical therapy, hospital or health care setting is desired, but not mandatory 0-1 year preferred
