Shift Time Schedule: 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. with availability to be on-call after hours
Days: Monday - Friday
Salary Scale: Registered: $30.24 - $41.51 Based on experience
Certified: $26.87 - $38.68 Based on experience
POSITION SUMMARY
Administers respiratory therapy and cardiology diagnostic and therapeutic tests and treatments to patients under the supervision and direction of the physician.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Reads and follows prescriptions and physician orders; reviews patient information to assess patient condition.
Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with physician order.
Sets up, operates, and monitors invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, and aerosol generators.
Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and administers medicinal gases and aerosolized medications to patients.
Handles and transports medical gas cylinders in a proper and safe manner, and changes tanks and regulators as needed
Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, oxygen saturation, and blood chemistry changes.
Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene and drainage and assists patient in performing breathing and coughing exercises.
Records results of patient therapy in medical record in an accurate, complete, and comprehensive manner.
Performs arterial puncture to obtain blood gases for analysis.
Performs 12 lead EKGs and Holter Monitors.
Instructs patients on use of Home Sleep study equipment.
May perform pulmonary function testing, including forced vital capacity, diffusion capacity, and lung volumes.
May perform cardiac stress testing, including nuclear stress tests.
Accurately processes diagnostic test results for physician review.
Consults with Physician in event of an adverse reaction to therapy.
Responds to emergency situations within the hospital for manual resuscitation, and airway management.
Demonstrates Respiratory Therapy procedures and techniques to trainees and
other health care personnel.
Strictly follows hospital policy regarding Universal Precautions and Isolation procedures.
May be required to cover "on call" hours as needed.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Qualifications: ability to perform each essential function in a safe, caring and satisfactory manner.
Work Experience: 6 months clinical experience preferred.
Education/Certifications/Licenses: Minimum of a an Associate degree or equivalent from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. Possesses National Registry or Certification credential. State of Iowa license is required.
Desired Work Traits: Regular attendance, excellent technical and critical thinking skills in relation to sound patient care judgement.
Communication Skills: maintains effective and professional communication with physicians, co-workers, other healthcare providers, and patients.
Equipment/Tools
Operate invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilators, pulmonary function equipment, EKG machine, holter monitor, home sleep equipment, heated humidified high-flow nasal cannula, aerosol nebulizers, pulse oximeters, medical gas cylinders, and stress test equipment, as well as office equipment such as computers, printers, copy machine, facsimile, and scanners.
Working Conditions
Typical working conditions involve sitting, working at a computer, walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, pushing equipment and wheelchairs, assisting in positioning and lifting patients

Vision must be correctable to view computer screens and read printed information. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
