Occupational Therapy Specialist, Assistive Technology for Community Living The Occupational Therapy Specialist provides direct services to individuals with disabilities (clients), working with family, caregivers, school professionals, employment supervisors, recreational program directors as necessary in the Assistive Technology Unit. Provides evaluation, implementation, and follow-up services to clients attempting to make transition from nursing home or state-operated developmental centers to community living. Assesses for appropriate assistive technology in areas that include activities of daily living, mobility, instrumental activities of daily living, access to augmentative communication. Consult with rehabilitation engineers and equipment specialists when device modification or custom design is required. Provides clinical supervision to DHD 590 - Field Experience students. Duties & Responsibilities: Assesses and evaluates client abilities and environmental factors in their home, school, worksite, and recreation setting for barriers to the client's independence goals. Investigates, analyzes, and determines the most appropriate combination of assistive technology devices and options which will enable the client to maximize their independence and safety. Assistive technology to include devices for bathing, dressing, self-care, mobility, specialized seating, accessibility modifications, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and money management. Maintains current product information regarding assistive technology and procedures. Conducts background research to identify appropriate third-party payers, and documents the recommended assistive technology being submitted for prior approval before acquisition or reimbursement after issuance. Communicates with third-party payers in response to inquiries. Following third-party payer prior approval, orders devices and performs specified modifications. Receives, sets up, and checks devices for proper functioning prior to issuance. At issuance of devices, performs all set up, adjustments, and testing with client. Performs in-the-field corrective work as necessary. Compiles and analyzes data on assistive technology provided to clients.
