DESCRIPTION:

Provides diagnostic and therapeutic services related to the communication disabilty of an individual identified in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

SUPERVISION:

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Special Education.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identifies, accesses, and provides remediation therapy to students with speech and language disorders.
  • Prepares curriculum materials, documentation, evaluations, and classroom lessons.
  • Facilitates the placement process for students.
  • Interacts with parents, teachers, private providers, counselors, and other specialists.
  • Coordinates the total program for students.
  • Surveys schools in order to identify children with speech, hearing and language problems
  • Re-evaluates students who where enrolled for services at some previous time.
  • Reports referrals from teachers and other school personnel of pupils with potential speech problems.
  • Record the pupils diagnostic, evaluation and progress and to send a copy to each teacher whose pupils have been identified as having speech problems.
  • Assesses pupils auditory acuity.
  • Refers pupil for psychological assessment as necessary.
  • Consults with the teachers regarding pupils speech problems.
  • Recommend further testing (nurse, doctor, neurologist, etc.) for more severe cases.
  • Requests parent interview of pupils enrolled in the speech program.
  • Keeps appropriate records of all findings.
  • Enroll pupils in individual and group therapy according to their age and needs.
  • Plans and administers therapy and materials provided according to the needs of the individual pupil.
  • Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
  • Coordinates therapy with other special services.
  • Provides a positive atmosphere conducive to instill a desire for the pupil to correct his speech problem.
  • Evaluates pupils progress by re-testing periodically.
  • Confers with parents regarding pupils progress.
  • Dismisses pupil when speech problem is corrected.
  • Submits final evaluation to principal and teachers for their review and evaluation.
  • Submits summary report to the State of California.
  • Files record for follow-up studies.
  • Presents in-service training workshops and materials to teachers to aid and encourage classroom teachers in teaching speech and language improvement in the classroom.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED:

1.Education-Bachelor Degree or higher education.

2.Knowledge of

-Regular education curriculum assessment tools and curriculum modifications.

-Due process rights and procedures.

-Specialized curriculum.

-Effective interpersonal communication techniques.

3.Ability to

-Collaborate and coordinate with others to provide comprehensive services.

-Provide in-services to parents, staff, agencies and others.

-Identify, assess, conduct IEP meetings and facilitate a program to meet student needs.

-Prepare curriculum materials, documentation, evaluations, small group and classroom lessons.

-Interact effectively with parents, students, staff and agencies.

4.Licenses, Permits

-Valid California Credential authorizing services as a speech and language specialist.

-Valid California Drivers License and proof of automobile insurance.
