LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

K.D. Markley Elementary School

First Semester of 2025-26 school year (August 2025 January 2026)
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services, to lead the process in the development, implementation, and coordination of the school district's speech program. In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Speech/Language Pathologist must work closely with the staff and administration of the cooperative and the school district.

Essential Functions
  • Plan and instruct students daily on specific, individualized qualifying IEP goal areas.
  • Provide quality, daily instruction for students.
  • Communicate effectively with students and their families as needed.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment; should be flexible and have a cooperative attitude with fellow team members.
  • Proactively solve problems and address areas of concern for students.
  • Use effective classroom management to support a safe and nurturing learning environment.
  • Assist in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students.
  • Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to District and cooperative guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district, cooperative, and community.
  • Provide targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and occupational performance within the school environment.
  • Assess the need for assistive technology and equipment and makes recommendations for its use at school to help students function as independently as possible.
  • Document speech therapy services, and maintain records in accordance with school district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct continuing education for school staff, parents, and students.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.


General Responsibilities
  • Assist in early recognition and prevention of educational problems related to communication/speech and language
  • Monitor student progress and make informed, timely educational decisions.
  • Conduct speech, language, and hearing screening and diagnostic evaluations to determine the need for clinical services.
  • Skill in selecting and providing a wide range of intervention strategies and monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies.
  • Ability to determine the need for speech therapy evaluation and to select and administer appropriate assessment tools to evaluate the student.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Skill in selecting and implementing assistive technology and providing IEP team training to enhance its functional use across settings.
