Job Summary

Oversees clinical and equipment related day-to-day operations of Respiratory Therapy Department. Provides support for clinical practice at point of care. Role models patient care practices through direct patient care as well as serving as a preceptor to new employees.

For Technical Consultant - Performs the duties and responsibilities of a laboratory Technical Consultant as delegated by the Laboratory Director and outlined in the Technical Consultant Assessment and Qualification Form on an as needed basis.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides direct patient care 50-75% of time worked.

  • Oversees staff schedules, including time off requests|coverage.

  • Facilitates maintenance of relevant dept. manuals and education records. Identifies need for and promotes policies related to patient care.

  • Helps to research best practice and implement changes to service delivery.

  • Consults with members of the healthcare team on respiratory therapy procedures required to meet the physiological needs of the patients.

  • Supervises and assists therapists|nursing in the transport of critically ill patients. Reviews and monitors staff documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record.

  • Facilitates ordering, maintenance, and repair of respiratory related supplies|equipment.

  • Oversees laboratory services to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.

  • Completes payroll in a timely fashion.

  • Reports to the department manager regarding departmental issues. serves as a link between manager and dept. staff.

  • Coordinate other responsibilities as designated appropriate by the Director.

  • Acts as liaison with administration and medical staff re: issues related to patient care.

  • Handles customer service or personnel issues related to patient care.

  • Performs technical correlation for the iSTAT and glucose point of care testing as assigned.

  • Performs CAP proficiency testing as assigned.

  • Assists with in-servicing of new clinical staff and competency of waived testing as assigned.

  • Assists with training of new clinical staff (respiratory care practitioners, therapists, nurses) on respiratory aspects of care as assigned.

  • Assists with coordination of durable medical equipment for patient families prior to discharge as assigned.

  • Assists patients, families and vendors with durable medical equipment needs as assigned.

  • Communicates information and updates related to durable medical equipment to key steak holders.

  • Provides education to patients and families regarding DME equipment and all respiratory care modalities as assigned.

  • Assists with compliance with Joint Commission and CLIA requirements as assigned

  • Assists with interview and hiring of new staff.

  • Responsible for assisting with orientation of new staff to dept. and hospital procedures in collaboration with the department educator.

  • Provides clinical supervision to staff and assists with annual review process for dept. staff.

  • Assists with development|monitoring of competencies and the training of staff in collaboration with department educator and preceptors.

  • Assists with identification and implementation of clinical performance improvement include tracheostomy changes.

  • Acts as a mentor to all clinical staff. Ensures excellence in delivery of patient care and achievement of patient outcomes.

  • Assists in coordinating student clinical experience as needed. Coordinates dept. in-service|training in collaboration with department educator.

  • Facilitates staff clinical assignments with adjustments as needed based on patient acuity and census.

Salary Range: $42.27 - $59.70, Hourly

Formal Education and Job-Related Experience

*

Graduate from an AMA approved respiratory therapy program required. Baccalaureate degree in science or respiratory therapy required.

For Technical Consultant Bachelor of Science in medical technology and 2 years of laboratory training/experience in non-waived testing in the designated specialty/subspecialty of responsibility.

Certification

*

AHA BLS Provider Certification required.

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required if hired after 1/1/2021.

License

*

Current respiratory therapy licensure in New Jersey.

Education and Experience - Additional Comments

Training and experience in role of respiratory care practitioner.

Physical Demands

Able to lift and carry equipment and patients greater than 15 pounds or greater. Potential for blood and body fluid splashes and exposures. On feet most of the day. Bending, walking, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling.
