Physical Therapist Position Description
Shift- 5 Days, 8 Hours (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM)
- Blocked scheduling: schedule varies each month
- Current or eligible for licensure as a Physical Therapist by the New Mexico Board of Physical Therapy
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent; Certificate, Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from an approved and accredited program by the American Physical Therapy Association
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English (additional languages preferred)
- Strong written and verbal skills
- Basic computer knowledge
- Knowledge of physical medicine, physical therapy modalities, anatomy, and physiology
- Knowledge of physical therapy machine operation, maintenance, and repairs
Responsible for evaluating, planning, directing, and administering physical therapy modalities of treatment as prescribed by a licensed physician. Administers treatments and physical agents to restore function and prevent disability following injury, disease, or physical disability. Assists patients to reach their maximum performance and level of functioning while adapting to their capabilities. Participates in operational aspects of the department, maintains performance improvement activities, and engages in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities. Contributes to infection control, departmental equipment training, and organizational safety and fire safety programs. This description is not exhaustive; other related duties may be assigned.
Responsibilities- Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide services based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and other criteria appropriate to the patient population
- Maintains required core competencies and complies with set policies and procedures (eg, name tag, dress code, parking, smoking)
- Accurately interprets referrals for proper and complete patient assessment
- Gathers and interprets data from medical records, care providers, patients, and families to develop an effective plan of care (POC)
- Proactively communicates with other physical therapists when patient presentation exceeds skill, knowledge, or understanding
- Implements POC to achieve expected clinical outcomes, adjusting behaviors based on patient condition
- Completes documentation thoroughly and accurately on the same day treatment is rendered
- Develops realistic, reasonable goals with patients and families, including time frames and frequencies
- Communicates POC effectively to delegates of care for clear understanding and action
- Monitors and modifies POC and goals based on patient response to treatment
- Utilizes input from supervised staff and care providers to adjust POC according to patient condition
- Communicates timely with physicians and nursing staff when changes in orders are needed
- Ensures desired outcomes are achieved through communication follow-up
- Builds and maintains patient and family relationships to maximize clinical outcomes and eventual disposition
- Plans for patient discharge from admission, documented through the entire length of stay and in discussions with care providers
- Utilizes supervised staff time and skills efficiently to maximize productivity
- Treats Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) and PT Techs with respect
- Observes and evaluates treatment effects, recommending changes to physicians as needed
- Performs appropriate assessments and reassessments per policy
- Assesses patient pain affecting function or rehabilitation participation, contacting physicians for intervention
- Provides care in an environment optimizing patient safety and reducing medical/health care errors
- Formulates and implements a teaching/education plan based on identified learning needs, evaluating effectiveness ongoing
- Demonstrates knowledge of physical therapy modalities
- Treats patients and families with respect, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly
- Maintains department cleanliness and safety
- Communicates clearly with physicians and the patient care team
- Works with Case Management to facilitate discharge planning
- Coordinates and implements patient care to meet patients' needs and follow hospital policy
- Maintains records pertinent to personnel and department operations
- Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and ability to function under stressful situations
- Utilizes time productively, emphasizing patient care and related by-products
