Same Day Access Therapist Supervisor

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. An Overview

The Therapist Supervisor provides clinical supervision and leadership to the Same Day Access team which delivers immediate walk-in evaluations and brief interventions for youth, families and adults presenting with mental health and substance use needs. Conducts clinical assessment evaluations and supervises staff in conducting diagnostic evaluations, treatment planning and referrals for services. Responsible for coordinating referrals to department programs/services and external providers. Ensures adherence to the walk-in model and supports the integrity of Same Day Access in alignment with System Transformation Excellence and Performance (STEP-VA) guidelines. Serves as the team coordinator and collaborates with internal programs and other community partners to support individuals, youth and families with mental health, substance abuse, intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) or other co-occurring needs.

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should have expertise in conducting clinical assessments, ASAM level determinations, and treatment planning for youth, families and adults. Knowledge and experience supervising clinicians in a Same Day Access or comparable walk-in behavioral health model. Proficiency in Medicaid documentation and understanding of STEP-VA requirements. Strong Understanding of trauma-informed care and crisis stabilization models. Ability to manage a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment without pre-scheduled appointments. Thorough knowledge of individual and group behavior; thorough knowledge of abnormal psychology and psychotherapy techniques used in mental health, and/or substance abuse treatment programs. Skilled in psychological assessment and diagnosis. Ability to interpret properly psychological information and to prepare reports of findings. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with mental health clients, relatives of clients and associates.

Example of Duties

  • Provides clinical and administrative supervision to SDA Therapists and behavioral health staff members including routine review of assessments and documentation to ensure clinical quality, monitor consumer progress and to assist staff in offering sound and appropriate services;
  • Conducts clinical assessments and formulates diagnostic evaluations for mental health, substance use, and co-occurring conditions using DSM-5 and ASAM criteria (for youth, families, and adults), for differential diagnoses, clinical impressions, treatment recommendations, and safety planning;
  • Ensures fidelity to the walk-in, first-come, first-served model by managing client workflow and staffing coverage;
  • Attends meetings and participates on committees for the purpose of representing the SDA Team within the agency and the community at large;
  • Completes written assessments and prepares reports/statistics to monitor SDA service trends;
  • Collaborates with agency teams to ensure timely transitions to care;
  • Participates in program development and clinical training to SDA staff;
  • Initiates medical, psychiatric, and psychological treatment referrals as needed;
  • Prepares reports for court proceedings, represents the Department, and testifies as an expert witness on behalf of consumers;
  • Assures all services are provided and documented accurately and timely in accordance with Federal, State, and program guidelines;
  • Maintains clinical records in accordance with Departmental, City, State, and Federal compliance requirements;
  • Assists in the hiring, onboarding, evaluating, and training of SDA staff;
  • Performs related work as required.

About the Department

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Master's degree in Human Services; two years post-graduate work experience in providing direct clinical services to clients having psychiatric and/or substance abuse disorders; at least two years post-master's experience providing diagnostic evaluations, assessments, and crisis intervention. Licensed in Virginia as an LCSW, LPC, LSATP, or Clinical Psychologist OR is license eligible (has completed all required education and supervision as required by applicable board) as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP), or Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of appointment; if license eligible, the employee must obtain Virginia license at the first available opportunity, but no later than one year after appointment. Good driving record/background check; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of experience working in high-volume clinical settings with walk-in or crisis models of care. At least one year of supervisory or program coordination experience. At least two years post graduate work experience in providing direct clinical services to youth, families and adults having psychiatric, emotional and substance abuse disorders; At least one year of experience providing diagnostic evaluations, assessments and emergency services to include assessment for hospitalizations and pre-screens for detentions; Current licensure in Virginia as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Psychologist. At least one year experience with Same Day Access, Fluent and Bilingual in both English and Spanish.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM.
