The University of Miami Health System Department of UMHC - SCCC - Massage Services has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Message Therapist to work at the UM hospital and Clinics in Miami.

The incumbent administers table and chair massages for patients, pre-treatment, and post-treatment. Works in a variety of settings, such as outpatient, inpatient, and infusion areas. Manages inventories and treatment areas. Interviews patients to gather medical information, assessing clients' soft tissue condition, joint quality and function, muscle strength, and range of motion. Administers therapy treatments to patients using hands or physical aids, massaging muscles and soft tissues of the body to provide treatment for medical conditions or injuries. Prepares and blends various oils and applies the blends to clients' skins. Confers with clients about their medical histories and problems with stress or pain to determine how massage will be most helpful. Provides clients with guidance and information about techniques for postural improvement, stretching, strengthening, relaxation, and rehabilitation. Orients patients on proper use of medical equipment and explains medical procedures. Documents treatment in patients' medical records. Consults with other health care professionals, such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, physicians, and psychologists to develop a treatment plan. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field

  • Graduate of an accredited Massage Therapy program or school.

  • Completion of specialized coursework or continuing education in oncology massage.

Certification and Licensing:

  • BLS certification required.

  • Current Florida State Massage Therapy License (LMT) in good standing is required.

  • Certification in Oncology Massage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

Maintain supply inventory. Responsible for updating licensing and certifications as required by the University & department. Assists in providing orientation and training to new employees for the department or the Uhealth System. Provide individualized therapeutic massage services to oncology patients across all stages of treatment, including those undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or palliative care. Modify massage techniques appropriately based on diagnosis, treatment plan, medical history, and physical condition to ensure safety and comfort. Utilize gentle modalities appropriate for immunocompromised or medically fragile patients, such as light touch, lymphatic drainage, or hand and foot massage. Deliver bedside massage services to inpatients, including those in the Chemotherapy Treatment Unit (CTU), as appropriate. Collaborate with nursing and clinical teams to identify patients who may benefit from massage and to coordinate sessions safely within clinical workflows. Document services provided and observations in the electronic medical record in accordance with hospital policies. Offer massage therapy sessions in outpatient cancer centers and infusion suites across Sylvester locations, including regional satellites. Travel to multiple locations as needed to provide consistent coverage and access to massage therapy for all oncology patients. Adhere to the department dress code.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Deep understanding of the effects of cancer and cancer treatments on the body, including precautions and contraindications for massage.

  • Skilled in adjusting massage techniques for medically fragile or immunocompromised patients.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary care teams (e.g., nurses, social workers, chaplains, navigators).

  • Proficient in documenting therapeutic interventions in the electronic medical record (EMR) in alignment with clinical protocols.

  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures, especially relevant to inpatient and CTU settings.

  • Compassionate, calm, and supportive presence that aligns with the mission of holistic, patient-centered care.

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, including CEUs in oncology massage and participation in hospital or departmental training.

  • Culturally sensitive and respectful of patients' diverse values, beliefs, and backgrounds.
