Position Summary

Sets up a variety of electromechanical respiration equipment to obtain data relative to functioning of patient needing such assistance, and to administer prescribed doses of medicinal gases and aerosolized drugs to patients with respiratory disorders.

Position Duties (not all inclusive)

  • Reviews physician's request to determine requirements for tests and/or treatments.
  • Assists medical nursing staff as requested, including introduction of respiratory care modalities.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in ventilator care, obtaining arterial blood gas samples and running samples, administering IPPB and handheld aerosol treatments, obtaining and administering medication, administering incentive spirometry, administering aerosol therapy, setting up all types of oxygen delivery appliances, basic breathing exercises, postural drainage techniques, emergency procedures for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, pulse oximetry.

Qualifications

Job Summary:

A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in the evaluation, treatment, and care of patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. RTs work under the supervision of physicians and are integral to both emergency care and long-term treatment plans in hospitals, clinics, and home care settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and evaluate patients' respiratory conditions using diagnostic tools and physical assessments.

  • Administer treatments such as oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.

  • Operate and monitor ventilators and other life-support equipment.

  • Perform pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis.

  • Educate patients and their families on managing respiratory conditions, including the proper use of inhalers and home respiratory equipment.

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans.

  • Respond to emergency situations such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and rapid response calls.

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained, cleaned, and functioning properly.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in compliance with healthcare regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy (accredited program).

  • Licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

  • Knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) and relevant respiratory therapy equipment.

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in hospitals, emergency rooms, intensive care units (ICUs), outpatient clinics, and patient homes.

  • May involve exposure to infectious diseases and physically demanding tasks (e.g., lifting patients, standing for long hours).

  • Rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holiday work may be required.
