Detailed Overview

Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Programs, the Recreation Therapist is responsible for the development, administration and evaluation of recreation and social programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of the clients in the Residential Care Unit and Adult Day Care programs. This position also supervises activity workers.
Responsibilities

  1. Utilizing the philosophy and vision of the facility to plan, promote, organize, implement, and evaluate a wide range of recreation and social programs designed to meet the needs of the residents/clients. Connects with external agencies and parties as needed for programming.
  2. Conducts recreation assessments for new residents/clients and reassesses appropriate programs. Monitors, evaluates and documents resident/client participation and progress.
  3. Organizes and directs programs ensuring space requirements, supply requirements and program staffing requirements. Conducts recreation programs as appropriate, including outings and food preparation activities.
  4. Accesses resident/client comfort funds for outings and special activities and completes accompanying documentation of monies.
  5. Maintains and orders recreation supplies subject to approval by the clinical manager.
  6. Acts as a resource for Resident's Council by providing pertinent information and carrying out relevant duties.
  7. Provides direction to activity workers, students and volunteers.
  8. Assists with staff/family/volunteer and resident/client education as required.
  9. Assists the clinical manager in the hiring of staff. Supervises activity workers by scheduling and coordinating work assignments; provides input into employee performance evaluations and identifies/arranges education for staff.
  10. Provides feedback to the Coordinator, Volunteer Resources on the performance of volunteers.
  11. Participates in committee work as required.
  12. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy. Three years' recent, related experience in Geriatrics. Eligible for membership with the B.C. Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA). Current certificate in Basic First Aid and CPR Level C. FoodSafe Level 1 Certificate. Valid Class 4 BC Driver's Licence.
