The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) works as part of a team to provide physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Graduate of a CAPTE-accredited PTA program
  • Licensed as a Physical Therapy Assistant in North Carolina
  • Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications
  • Knowledge of practice management and word processing software
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following

  • Measure the patients motor function
  • Record strength and muscle performance
  • Assist physical therapists in developing treatment plans
  • Observe patients and write progress reports
  • Evaluate the capability of patients to function independently
  • Assist patients in carrying out specific exercises
  • Treat patients with varieties of techniques, like stretching and massage
  • Help patients with equipment and devices, like walkers
  • Use and care for braces or prostheses (artificial body parts)
  • Use electrical stimulation and ultrasound
  • Educate patients on how to exercise properly to strengthen muscle and improve mobility
  • Teach the patients and their family members what to do at home after treatment
    • Ensures timely communication of patient needs, concerns to physical therapist for appropriate change in the patients plan of care
    • Maintains compliance with infection control policies and procedures
    • Performs patient education when appropriate including oral and written education related to diagnosis, procedures, and/or medications
    • Ensures all documentation accurately reflects the patient encounter and plan of care

Other

  • Follows all applicable department and practice policies and procedures
  • Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA privacy and confidentiality guidelines established by the practice
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
  • Computer input of patient information
  • Participates in mandatory staff functions as directed by manager/team lead
  • Performs all other tasks and projects delegated or assigned by manager
  • Maintains a pleasant and cooperative demeanor while performing all duties
  • Maintains compliance with continuing education requirements to maintain current certifications, licensure, etc.
  • Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds.
