PRIMARY PURPOSE:

A mental health counselor helps individuals, families, and groups address mental and emotional disorders and behavioral challenges through counseling, therapy, and other interventions. Mental health counselors treat clients who have a variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, grief, and stress. They assess client needs, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress, often collaborating with other professionals to provide comprehensive care.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Valid Texas LPC Associate (LPCA) license in good standing.
  • Must maintain active supervision under a board-approved LPC-Supervisor.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, adolescents, and/or families in a school or clinical setting.
  • Fully licensed Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas.
  • Experience in a school-based or educational setting.
  • Familiarity with crisis intervention, behavior intervention strategies, and/or trauma-informed care.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of counseling techniques, crisis intervention, and behavior management strategies
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed practices, and mental health diagnoses
  • Ability to develop and implement individualized student support plans and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including at-risk youth, students with special needs, or in Title I school environments (preferred)
  • Proficiency with digital documentation systems and case management platforms (preferred)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) abilities a plus

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of counseling experience in an educational, clinical, or community-based setting (may include practicum/internship for LPCA)
  • Experience in school-based mental health services, wraparound support, or student assistance teams (preferred)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Conduct initial assessments and evaluations to understand clients' mental health needs and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions, offering support and guidance to help clients address the core

Treatment Planning:

  • Develop and implement treatment plans, monitoring client progress and adjusting plans as needed.
  • Work with clients to identify behaviors or situations that impact their recovery.

Crisis Intervention:

  • Provide crisis intervention and support during emergency situations

Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting process and treatment plans.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and agencies to provide holistic care.

Education and Support:

  • Educate clients and their families about mental health issues, coping strategies, and available resources that meet each person where they are at.

Continuing Education:

  • Stay updated on the latest research and developments in mental health counseling and participate in professional development opportunities.

Referrals:

  • Refer clients to appropriate resources and services, such as support groups or specialized treatment centers.

  • Knowledge of mental health disorders and treatment modalities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Understanding of ethical and legal considerations in mental health counseling.
  • Strong knowledge of mental health disorders, as well as psychology, therapy and counseling approaches.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess a patient's situation and build treatment plans.
  • Excellent listening skills to best understand a patient's issues and concerns.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively guide patients and establish trust
  • Crisis intervention skills to respond to patients in acute distress
