The RT 2 serves as a role model and resource that assists and supports the clinical team. The RT 2 in Pulmonary Services Lab is responsible for providing direct patient care and assessment; interdisciplinary consultation; oversight of technical and clinical performance of students; supports clinical activity as directed by leadership; and participates in ongoing clinical practice improvement. The RT 2 provides a full range of cardiopulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients of all age groups. They obtain, review, and interpret data and assess the need for and response to respiratory care interventions in consultation and conjunction with medical, nursing and other disciplines to optimize patient care planning and delivery. The RT 2 performs pulmonary function testing, metabolic testing, exercise testing, and bronchoscopy assistance. They respond to departmental and adjunct department cardiopulmonary emergencies, provide airway support during testing and procedures, administer oxygen and other therapeutic gases, post-testing humidity therapy, inhaled aerosol medications, bronchial hygiene, and instruct patient's family and continuing care providers in the administration of respiratory procedures and the proper use of highly technical pulmonary equipment and supplies. Additionally, the RT 2 provides support to the Blood Gas Lab including blood gas analysis, whole blood electrolyte analysis, co-oximetry measurements and quality control of Blood Gas Lab instruments, entering test data in the Blood Gas Lab and UC Davis Health EMR computer systems and maintaining analyzers in operational condition for the above tests. The RT 2maintains existing computer programs and hardware within the Pulmonary and Blood Gas Labs, and develops new programs as needed. RT 2assures that equipment is patient ready and calibrated, sent to Clinical Engineering as appropriate, and helps assure that medical supplies and equipment are available for patient care. They troubleshoot computer hardware and software problems in conjunction with the manufacturer. In the absence of a Respiratory Care Specialist 5, the RT 2 functions as a leader RT, preceptor, and coordinator for care delivery.

California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) required within one year of hire.
American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR.
American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Current and valid California Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
Three (3) years of relative experience in an acute care setting.
Possesses the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of pulmonary lab and blood gas lab procedures.
Current with all mandatory hospital and department required competencies.
Knowledgeable of and complies with all applicable infection control and health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and UC Davis Health.
Performs basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning. Assists other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results.
Demonstrates sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients and visitors.
Demonstrates effectiveness in spoken and written communication.
Ability to work independently, problem solve and exhibit good time-management practices.
Responsible for maintaining reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments.
Prioritizes patient care based on: Emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, and routine care.

Patient assessment pre, during, and post diagnostic testing and invasive/non-invasive procedures.
Knowledge and skill in the operation of pulmonary lab, blood gas lab, and bronchoscopy equipment.
