Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH) is a 54-bed, 24-hour locked psychiatric facility located in Butner, North Carolina. YBH provides specialized care through four units serving children, adolescents, and young adults ages 10-21 with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse, and complex behaviors. The facility's philosophy is grounded in a trauma-informed, milieu-based approach that ensures a safe, therapeutic setting. YBH serves patients with complex histories, including aggression and psychosis, focusing on safety while promoting positive coping skills, healthy living, and engaging in leisure activities. As part of a large, interdisciplinary team including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Nursing Services, the Speech/Lang Pathologist will play a vital role in the recovery process.
This position will primarily serve our 4YBH unit, which specializes in caring for patients with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Speech-Language Pathologist will evaluate and provide ongoing treatment for all patients on 4YBH, addressing a range of needs including communication, social pragmatics, and feeding and swallowing skills. The SLP will also collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team to develop individualized care plans that support each patient's unique strengths and challenges. Patients on our other units will be seen on a consultative basis as needed. We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about working with individuals with autism and IDD; prior experience in this area is highly preferred.
Summary:
Provides evidence-based, independent and highly skilled patient care consistent with professional standards and UNC Health Care's vision of leading, teaching and caring. The Speech Pathologist I is expected to have involvement in the areas of continuing education, departmental and community activities, outreach education and role of preceptor to students.
Responsibilities:
Diagnostic Testing - Administers basic & complex diagnostic tests and evaluations in the area of speech language pathology for the treatment of communication and swallowing disorders and related impairments.
Education - Teach & supervise graduate Speech/Language Pathology students and/or clinical fellows. Develops or contributes to innovative programs to enhance patient care. Serves as resource consultant to other clinicians in respective specialty area.
Evaluation of Care - Analyzes results of diagnostic and or therapeutic testing to establish patient goals and or modify subsequent treatment programs. Identifies expected patient outcomes. Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Implementation-- Selects and applies current and advanced techniques to provide quality and efficient rehabilitative services. Provides habilitation/rehabilitation and maintenance of persons with communication, cognitive, and related impairments. Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient/family needs.
Outreach/Community Involvement-Serves as resource to North Carolina government departments and statewide health professionals in specialty areas. Presents at local (university/hospital) or state level, participates in community health screening and events. Participates in the development of new clinical programs to meet emerging needs in conjunction with the clinical specialist and/or department director.
Participation - Contributes to quality of clinical services through attendance and participation in departmental meetings and in-services.
Quality-Contributes to quality of clinical services through maintenance of valid & reliable records of patient procedures & progress. Participates in quality improvement initiatives with the clinical specialist and other healthcare professionals. Participates in continuous quality improvement efforts in conjunction with the department director.

Education Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited Speech-Language Pathology program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Speech-Language Pathology certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).Licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
Professional Experience Requirements:
One (1) year of experience in the field of Speech Pathology.
