  • Implement and coordinate all therapeutic recreation programs within the facility under the direction of the Manager of Resident and Family Services and Recreation Therapy
  • Develop goals and objectives for the provision of recreation and leisure services
  • Develop therapeutic recreation programs and services in response to residents needs, expressed interests and/or based on best-practices
  • Provide programming and services on days, evenings, weekends
  • Ensure that program planning includes written goals and objectives, a description of the staff and space requirements necessary to implement the activity
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures relevant to recreation and leisure programs and services
  • Manage equipment resources
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Provide opportunities for each resident to plan, initiate, facilitate and participate in his/her own recreation, leisure and educational opportunities within the facility and community
  • Research recreational and leisure opportunities that are suitable for residents with dementia and those with stable mental illness
  • Co-ordinate recreation services with other internal and external services and/or community agencies
  • Work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team and family members
  • Supervise student placements and volunteers
  • Facilitate and implement quality management and risk management activities for the department
  • Complete initial assessments, quarterly reports and annual reports in accordance with the MOHLTC Standards, and TRO Standards of Practice
  • Develop a recreation plan for each individual resident in accordance with their needs, skills, and functioning level
  • Assist the Manager of Resident and Family Services and Recreation Therapy in supporting and facilitating the Residents Council
  • Ensure that information about recreation, programs and services are readily available to residents, their representatives, and families
  • Ensure that assistance or adaptations are provided to facilitate residents participation in activities they wish to attend
  • Ensure that small group activities and individualized activities are provided for those residents not interested or able to participate in large group programs
  • Provide outings and activities outside of the facility
  • Participate as an active member of the Royal Recreation Therapy Discipline, reporting to the Chief of OT and Allied Health Professional Practice with regard to professional issues and standards
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the Royals Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • University degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies or an Allied Health Degree with a post-grad Therapeutic Recreation diploma will be considered.
  • Experience working with residents who suffer from a severe and persistent mental illness
  • Knowledge of the impact of diagnosis on leisure functioning
  • Knowledge and proficiency with RAI-MDS/RAPS/Care plans.
  • Ability to develop, plan and lead a variety of recreation therapy, leisure education and participation programs that are client-centered, evidence-based and outcome oriented
  • Experience conducting leisure assessments, developing and delivering therapeutic programs, evaluation of programs and services, documenting to reflect client-centered outcomes and progress, and facilitating links with the community
  • Flexibility in work schedule; day & evening hours and weekends as required
  • Must complete RAI-MH training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MH system is required on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain workload measurement and data collection (i.e. RAI-MH) as required and input into the workload measurement system on a regular basis.
  • Experience working in a Long Term Care Facility is an asset
  • Membership with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario is an asset
  • Class F license is an asset.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
