WAGE RANGE: $91,936 - $110,240

Position Summary:

Provides client-centered, strengths-based, and culturally responsive therapeutic services to individuals, families, and groups in a clinical setting. Conducts evaluations, diagnostics, therapy, and crisis intervention using evidence-based practices, with a focus on those developed to treat co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Supports clients in their recovery journey by facilitating engagement in behavioral health services. Adheres to HIPAA and confidentiality requirements. Honors and represents the mission, vision, values of Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Health and Human Services department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts comprehensive assessments using a variety of instruments to determine the diagnosis, treatment motivation, relapse potential, physical health needs, mental health experience, environment and vocational situation; determines level of care, intervention strategies and an individualized care plan.
  • Collaborates with a diverse team of professionals integrating care in assessment, treatment and medical services to those receiving Behavioral Health services.
  • Adheres to established DSM guidelines and ASAM protocols.
  • Works with other community services and resources in obtaining and providing continuous care as part of an individualized recovery plan for clients.
  • Assists clients with gaining awareness of potential underlying causes of addiction and with accessing additional services if needed.
  • Counsels clients in a group or individual setting on the effects of drugs and alcohol and special health considerations such as pregnancy, mental health conditions or chronic health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure and the emotional/cognitive complications that may arise.
  • Engages clients through outreach and building rapport.
  • Develops appropriate individualized care and recovery plans to address the clients needs related to mental health and substance use, coping strategies, and recovery needs; educates families, friends, or other caregivers on how best to support individuals in care.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of treatment services; monitors client progress; remains aware of the signs of recidivism; conducts urinalysis as needed.
  • Participates as a member of the clinical team to staff cases, and review progress, hurdles, feedback, and recommendations.
  • Manages client caseload ethically in accordance with established procedures.
  • Incorporates traditional cultural approaches as needed to aid in therapy and recovery.
  • Completes all required documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares current client progress reports and completion notices and provides them to entities involved in a clients care as requested and authorized by the client..
  • Participates in professional development and maintains required certifications and licenses.
  • Adapts to changes in safety protocols and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment to achieve shared goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of traditional forms of government and tribal customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of client evaluation and plan of care procedures.
  • Knowledge of client outreach services and activities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, substance use treatment modalities and approaches..
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the use of DSM-V in the development of care plans for individuals experiencing symptoms related to mental health and substance use.
  • Skills in interviewing and psychological/developmental evaluation.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining client records.
  • Skill in verbal de-escalation techniques.
  • Ability to apply mental health counseling methods and techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and workshops.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of individual service plans.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to build rapport quickly and effectively with clients and those involved in their care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships and contribute to the creation of an inclusive environment.
  • Ability to approach interactions with courtesy and respect.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy or closely related field.
  • Licensed to provide mental health services (LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, PsyD) in Washington state. Certified as a substance use disorder professional (SUDP) in Washington state. Associate or trainee level credentials may be considered (a different salary range applies in these instances).
  • Experience working within American Indian and/or Alaska Native communities preferred.
  • Must have three years serving as a mental health counselor and two years as a substance use disorder professional.
  • Two years experience providing behavioral health services to youth is preferred.
  • Valid drivers license is required when driving vehicles for work-related purposes.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background screening / investigation according to the established requirements below.

Tribal preference in accordance with Cowlitz Indian Tribe Code and CIT Employee Policies and Procedures Handbook shall apply to all positions. All positions are required to adhere to CITs established safety policies regarding vaccine requirements and personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Pre-employment drug screen.
  • Reference checks, education, and employment verification.
  • Federal, state, and/or tribal criminal history and sanction checks including fingerprint verification.
  • Has not been found guilty of, charged with, received a deferred sentence, received a conditional discharge of, or entered a plea of not contest to, or entered a plea of guilty to any one felony or misdemeanor crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, exploitation or sexual contact; prostitution; or crimes committed against person(s) or children.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and communicate effectively. The employee occasionally is required to move throughout the facility; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and clarity of vision at long distance.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an office/clinical setting with a moderate noise level. Employees may be exposed to bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, and infectious diseases. Situations may occur where PPE (personal protective equipment) is needed. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
