Cleveland Clinics Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) offers the most advanced technology for diagnosing and monitoring lung diseases. Staffed by pulmonologists, respiratory therapists and technicians, we screen patients at risk for lung disease, evaluate their symptoms and the effect of lung disease on lung function, assess the value of respiratory treatments, and monitor for reactions to drugs that are known to damage

the lungs.

A caregiver in this position works 7: 0 0am 3 : 3 0pm or 8:30am5:00pm .

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide diagnostic evaluation of pulmonary function in patients with respiratory insufficiencies.

  • Perform ordered pulmonary function testing according to latest ATS/ERS standards and understand criteria required for sending test results.

  • Perform and analyze quality control data and perform advanced invasive or noninvasive protocols.

  • Prepare, maintain , and calibrate pulmonary function testing equipment.

  • Maintain adequate levels of supplies used for testing.

  • Provide educational in-services to caregivers .

  • P erform blood gas puncture and analysis per Cleveland Clinic competency training.

  • Monitor and evaluate patient response during and after testing.

  • Documents results accurately and p romptly report testing results.

  • Determine testing reference ranges by entering accurate demographics.

  • Recognize and correc t invalid or unreasonable test results with an understanding of current ATS/ERS standards.

  • Provide basic respiratory education to patients .

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Associates degree from an accredited respiratory therapy program

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) credentialed by the NBRC

  • Ohio Respiratory Care Professional (RCP) license

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelors D egree

  • One year of patient care experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to administer six minute walk tests at a pace of at least 3.0 mph (average walking speed), ability to move K cylinders onto dollies, ability to change gas cylinder regulators with a wrench and ability to lift boxes up to 25 pounds in weight.

  • Ability to perform pulmonary function tests for demonstration purposes and for the collection of biological control data for QC purposes.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
