GENERAL SUMMARY

Provision of treatments, therapies including medication, to patients of all ages in accordance with physician written orders and in accordance with the organization and department policies and procedures. Has knowledge and training to apply special equipment and techniques in a manner that provides positive patient outcome. Has knowledge and training to assess patients for respiratory care needs and support, and ability to assess treatment or therapy outcome.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Properly, skillfully, and safely operates all equipment including but not limited to oxygen delivery, nebulizer therapy, Ventilator care, BIPAP use, percussive techniques, and sputum induction; appropriate to the assessment of the patient including age and condition.

Provision of medications to patients of all ages in accordance with the physician written order. Demonstrates knowledge of the various medications used in treatment or therapies, their indications and contraindications and proper dosage. Has the ability to assess patient outcomes including recognition of adverse reaction to medications.

Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to recognize and/or suggest alternative treatment or therapy modalities to physicians based upon assessment of the patient. the assessment of the patient including age and condition.

Demonstrates the ability to provide adequate patient education and instruction on the safety, appropriate and effective use of various respiratory therapies and treatments. sment of the patient including age and condition.

Accurately and legibly documents all assessments, treatments, therapies, medications, instructions, education, outcomes or other required information on appropriate medical records, forms, Interdisciplinary Plan of Care (IPOC) and log-sheets. Accurately enters correct patient charges for services provided.

Responsible for the review of treatment and therapy orders in assigned area including tagging protocol for renewal or discontinuance of orders and treatment hold protocol.

Follows Infection Control guidelines including isolation precautions, hand hygiene, equipment cleaning and sterilization. Follows safety precautions including the use of Personal Protective Equipment as appropriate and oxygen safety protocols. Has knowledge of oxygen emergency shut off locations and protocols.

Demonstrates the ability to procure arterial/venous blood gas specimens in accordance with the department procedure.

Demonstrates the ability to operate and analyze arterial/venous blood gas specimens using department blood gas analyzers.

Observes quality control and maintenance requirements of the department blood gas analyzers.

Demonstrates knowledge and initiative to take appropriate action when blood gas analyzer(s) parameters are out of operational limits.

Restocks supplies in all areas as needed, including Code Carts, equipment cleaning/preparation for sterilization. Keeps department designated areas and work carts clean and professional in appearance.

EDUCATION

Graduate of an approved two-year School of Respiratory Care or equivalent with current credentials of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Must have current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification (CPR). Must have a valid State of Illinois Respiratory Care Practioner License. Be able to apply the learned principles, methods, and techniques of Respiratory Care, the use, care and operation of Respiratory Care equipment and supplies. Must know the various locations of departments within the hospital, their policies and procedures.

Six (6) to twelve (12) months of previous experience in an inpatient care setting is desirable.
