Job Description

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts evidence-based, individual and family centered art therapy sessions with acute, chronic, and terminal patients utilizing clinical psychology in combination with the process of artmaking to address their mental health and psychosocial needs.
  • Creates and maintains a therapeutic alliance with patients/families by creating a caring, trusting, reliable and supportive space.
  • Uses independent clinical decision making to manage caseload and provide clinical assessment, treatment planning, and clinical documentation towards a patients psychological, emotional, communication/cognition, behavioral, and quality of life goals. Makes referrals to other team members and/or community resources as appropriate.
  • Autonomously prioritizes daily schedule and overall caseload/referrals that incorporates the needs of the patient, team and program. Collaborates with the medical and psychosocial team to determine acuity of each patient and coordinate service delivery.
  • Actively contributes to interdisciplinary rounds to assess patient and family needs and communicate progress and efficacy of art therapy treatment.
  • Collaborates among the Creative Arts Therapies team to educate staff and families throughout the hospital and affiliated communities on the role and benefits of art therapy.
  • Provides formal and informal supervision for art therapy students and interns, including orientation, training, caseload management, and ongoing feedback. Direct supervisors individualize the experience and provide consistent weekly clinical supervision and written evaluation for graduate level art therapy students. Provides weekly clinical supervision and timely feedback and evaluation to support students growth and experience.
  • Performs job functions adhering to our service principles and values. Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires completion of a masters degree in art therapy/counseling psychology from an American Art Therapy Association approved program.
  • Requires current ATR (Registered Art Therapist) credential by Art Therapy Credentials Board (acquired within 18 months); ATR-BC (Board Certified Art Therapist) preferred.
  • Requires LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) from the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (acquired within 18 months); LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) preferred.
  • Requires proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture, digital media, documenting artwork, etc.
  • 1-2 years of experience in medical art therapy preferred.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
  • Experience using evidence-based therapeutic interventions is required. Examples include Humanistic Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Additional certifications preferred: ATCS (Art Therapy Clinical Supervisor), CT ( Certified in Thanatology) EMDR training, SEP (Somatic Experience Professional), PMH-C (Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional), CCLS (Certified Child Life Specialist), etc.

Pay Range

$54,600.00-$89,273.60 Salary
