Position Summary

The Director is responsible for the ongoing effective operation of therapy services and for the ongoing assessment and improvement of the each departments’ services. Such responsibilities encompass not only the internal function of the department, but also the integration of the department to the overall functioning of St. Catherine Hospital. The therapy areas of services include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Management of Therapy Services:
  • Facilitates the coordination and integration of the services provided to patients.
  • Develops plan and leads the direction of therapy services program development and growth.
  • Develops departmental goals based on therapy services and hospital goals and assures staff communication of these goals.
  • Assesses patient volumes, referrals, growth of service lines and contribution margin.
  • Prepares management reports.
  • Assesses the need for space, resources, staff and equipment to meet patient care needs in cooperation with the supervisory team.
  • Utilizes the budgetary process and meetings with administration to plan for appropriate levels of staffing and to make recommendations concerning building planning processes.
  • Prepares and manages departmental and capital budgets in conjunction with supervisors.
  • Researches therapy services denials and assists in co-ordination efforts to help ensure reimbursement for services rendered.
  • Integrates the services of Therapy Services in the overall operation of St. Catherine’s Hospital with participation on committees, teams or groups as necessary.
  • Develops and approves departmental policies and procedures in conjunction with departmental supervisors.
  • Develops and implements an ongoing audit and training plan to review the accuracy of department billing practices.
  • Oversees the implementation of the quality management program in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
  1. Management of Staff:
  • Supervises and directs the supervisory personnel in physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
  • Evaluates management staff and other direct reports through performance appraisal and self-assessment.
  • Reviews and approves staff performance appraisals.
  • Assesses supervisors’ competency and mentors and guides as needed. Identifies needs for supervisory training or education as appropriate.
  1. Leadership:
  • Fosters a culture of positivity, teamwork, staff development and growth.
  • Provides leadership to promote the professional and personal growth of therapy services staff.
  • Assists in identifying staff potential. Fosters and supports reward and recognition efforts.
  • Assists supervisors in ensuring staff are held accountable.
  • Provides information and leadership to staff through staff meetings, participation in risk management activities and preparation of department budgets.
  • Promotes and assists supervisors’ efforts to ensure staff competency in billing and collection of upfront payments.
  • Promotes production and quality in the delivery of care.
  • Promotes continuing education within the department.
  • Promotes improvement in patient care and interdepartmental cooperation.
  1. Clinical / Direct Patient Care:
  • Evaluates, determine goals and treatment plan and administers appropriate therapy services to patients.
  • Completes all reports, evaluates, progress notes, patient care plans, daily billing, certifications and authorizations, on time.
  • Completes screening, evaluations, fittings, and documentation in accordance to the standard of practice and code of ethics.
  • Assess patient and family educational needs as part of the evaluations process.
  • Demonstrates in patient care and documentation, thoroughness, reliability and analytical sense guided by available evidence.
  • Documents in a manner to convey medical necessity, demonstrate skilled care, and support billing.
  1. Community Outreach:
  • Promotes effective clinical education for students.
  • Assists in development, oversees and approves marketing for therapy services.
  • Assists in analysis of referral patterns.
  • Promotes staff participation in community outreach programs, health fairs, and presentations to other departments, professional groups or community groups.
  • Promotes outside educational opportunities for professional staff.

Education/Experience

  • Graduate of accredited university program in Physical Therapy.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience as Senior Physical Therapist / Clinical Specialist or above with additional one (1) year supervisory experience.
  • Experience with quality management, budgets, staff recruitment and program development is essential to this position. Good communication skills are also important.
  • License/Registration/Certification: Indiana Licensure, CPR certification current, BLS Course C (Basic Life Support).
  • Must have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work with frequent interruption.
  • Must demonstrate self-assessment, initiation and the ability to lead a team.
  • Must have a customer service orientation and have the ability to communication and listen effectively. Must have critical thinking skills and demonstrate flexibility and the ability to accept change and provide alternative plans.
  • A thorough knowledge of hospital policies, plus an ability to understand, communicate with and lead and influence others to obtain willing acceptance, consent or action. Requires a high degree of diplomacy.
  • An understanding of federal and state regulations regarding billing, compliance, documentation and supervision of staff as it relates to the practice of therapy services.
  • Maintains knowledge of professional practice issues/changes locally and nationally.
