Montgomery County Department of Recreation ?is a nationally recognized and award-winning agency with a mission to provide high quality, diverse, and accessible community-based programs, activities, and services that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community. The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Department is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and energetic Recreation Specialist, to perform full-time work as a recreation center leader.

Recreation Specialists are responsible for the full range of day-to-day oversight and operation of assigned recreation centers, including:

  • Developing, organizing, and implementing a robust array of recreational program and activities;

  • Recruiting, recommending, training, and supervising seasonal employees and volunteers, assuring adequate and sufficient staffing to cover programs, activities, events and rentals.

  • Adhering to and monitoring compliance with all health and safety protocols, assuring that the center is clean, fully operational, and available for patrons.

  • Monitoring and making recommendations related to planned preventive maintenance and inspecting the facility to address emerging issues.

  • Promoting, marketing, coordinating, and monitoring communications, public relations and other media support for the center, serving as liaison to the Departments communications team;

  • Overseeing administrative and budgetary functions, adhering to established budgets and managing financial transactions.

  • Overseeing and coordinating administrative tasks including but not limited to: scheduling rentals; reviewing/approving seasonal timesheets; develop communications guides, flyers and other promotional materials; assure compliance with all deadlines and administrative requirements.

  • Establishing positive and effective relationships with community partners, including public schools, civic associations, faith-based organizations and residents, to create an open, inclusive and collaborative environment in the facility, and resulting in an active Advisory Committee, representative of the community, to support center operations.

  • Gathering, creating, and using appropriate data to develop and implement programming to enhance the customer experience.

Successful candidates will have excellent communications and organizational skills, both orally and in writing, as well as demonstrated experience in recreation programming and facilities management; budgeting and fiscal management; customer care; and proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office Suites and recreational software.

As a supervisor/organizer of unionized employees, these positions have responsibility for fostering a positive labor relations environment based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation; maintaining stability of seasonal employees by modeling desired behaviors through consistent and positive work ethic, and by advocating on behalf of the management team; and have the responsibility for motivating and providing direction and guidance to employees through clear articulation of work projects, goals and related services.

The selected candidates will be required to complete a background investigation and a medical exam with drug screen prior to appointment.

These positions require work during non-traditional hours to include early mornings, evenings/nights, weekends and holidays; may require work that involves physical demands, occasionally working outdoors in varying weather and extreme temperatures; and the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside of an assigned facility. Successful candidates may provide onsite coverage during facility operating hours and routinely assigned to cover and/or support multiple locations.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, incumbents are responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe .

  • Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible recreational specialist work involving planning, organizing, supervising, and implementing an area-wide, countywide, or special interest recreation program.

  • Education : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree .

  • Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be substituted

  • Experience coordinating and overseeing daily operations , maintenance, and programming of a recreation facility

  • Experience in assuring effective financial management of a recreation facility or program.

  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals, groups, organizations and/or government agencies to arrange, implement and/or promote recreation activities, programs and events.

  • Experience with recreational registration and/or facility management/scheduling software systems.
