Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of recreation programming, customer service, and administrative support for special needs populations for the County.

  • Organizes, instructs, and supervises assigned recreational activities for special needs populations, such as sports activities, Special Olympics, social events, parties, art classes, outings, and fields trips; gathers supplies and equipment; verifies completion of required forms for each participant; teaches and facilitates classes, clinics, and skills; provides information and direction; and ensures all activities comply with established rules, policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Ensures care for and monitoring of special needs participants; assists in transporting participants to and from events and activities; and monitors and assists with personal care needs, such as bath rooming, medication, etc.
  • Performs customer service functions; provides information or assistance regarding services, activities, forms, procedures, fees, or other issues; responds to routine questions and complaints; research problems and initiates problem resolution; and refers complaints/problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Processes participant registrations; receives requests for classes and activities; reviews registration forms for accuracy and completeness; enters information into online database and calendars; collects and records fees; and maintains related documentation.
  • Monitors inventory of materials and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; and inspects equipment, fields, and facilities for safety.
  • Develops goals, and objectives of the Special Needs Population programs with the director, staff, and community.
  • Develop the goals, and objectives for the Facility, continually updating the Emergency Action Plan for the facility.
  • Works with the business community in order to solicit sponsorships for programs, and special events, such as Special Olympics, and Wheelchair Sports. Assists in all fundraising events. Meets with the community (public schools, civic organization, and parents) to foster goodwill programs and to evaluate the effectiveness of programs, staff, and volunteers.
  • Remains current regarding new trends in working with the specified population, including specific rules and regulations affecting special programs and new trends in recreation administration.
  • Represents the department in GRPA concerning Therapeutic Recreation. Maintains National License by attending conferences to earn CEU credits per year.
  • Ensures the safety and wellbeing of participants in the program by monitoring all activities and making sure all safety measures are in place with facility/ selected programs.
  • Maintains an active volunteer list and makes sure all are up to date with background checks and requirements with Special Olympics Georgia.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of related experience in therapeutic recreation or working with special needs populations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia drivers license. National Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.

  • Knowledge of local government operations, parks and recreation related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evening meetings.
  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to work with and process payments for accounts within the budget and department.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and accounting purposes.
  • Ability to operate a copying machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
