Therapeutics Recreation Assistant

This position is responsible for conducting recreational therapeutic classes and camps in a safe, positive, educational, and fun environment. This person reports directly to the Arts and Entertainment Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Executes and supports planned therapeutic recreation programs to meet the needs of the community.
  • Assists supervisor in planning program activities.
  • Administers recreation classes, programs, and events.
  • Participates in structured activities with participants.
  • Observes, assists, and participates in assisting participants with acquiring new skills.
  • Reports accidents and injuries in accordance with City of Goose Creek policies.
  • Prepares facility for daily activities, programs and cleans up facility at end of the day.
  • Checks equipment for safety and reports any safety issues to supervisor immediately.
  • Ensures participant is released to the correct parent/guardian, as appropriate.
  • Maintains a safe environment for the participants.
  • Keeps daily attendance records and progress reports.
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • One (1) year of experience in recreation field or two (2) years of experience in Therapeutic Recreation preferred.
  • Any combination of education and experience totaling two (2) years is acceptable.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, psychology, and sociology.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task and plan for future needs.
  • Ability to manage a budget.
  • Ability to use computers and various software programs, to include Word and Excel.
  • Ability to provide customer service to include problem solving and dispute resolution when necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in an office environment and outdoors. Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, and respiratory hazards (e.g., dust, dirt, etc.).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Constantly requires hearing, vision, talking, and fine dexterity. Frequently requires handling/grasping, sitting, standing, and walking/running. Occasionally requires carrying, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting, and bending. Medium strength demands include exerting up to up to 20 pounds frequently and 20-50 pounds occasionally.

MENTAL DEMANDS

Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, irregular schedule/overtime, and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires tedious or exacting work and noisy/distracting environment.
