Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) is defined as a person licensed by the Georgia State Board of Occupational Therapy to assist an occupational therapist in delivery of treatment to patients with impairment in functional status in daily living skills following a disability, disease, or illness. The person in this position provides services to the following populations: Adults (Eighteen to seventy-five years old). Geriatrics (Seventy-five years and older).

Qualifications

  • Must obtain BLS within 30 days of hire
  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational therapy treatment procedures.
  • Graduate of an educational program that prepares certified Occupational Therapist Assistants and which is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency and approved by the State Board of Occupational Therapy.
  • Licensure by the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Occupational Therapy.

Area of Responsibilities

  • Delegates treatment implementation appropriately, based on the type of treatment prescribed, and level of training of support personnel. Instructs nursing and other staff in follow through activities as indicated.
  • Demonstrates competency in patient care according to the age of the patient and population served.
  • Develops home programs and discharge plans under direct supervision of licensed Occupational Therapist including input from patient and family.
  • Implements Occupational Therapy treatment programs under supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.
  • Maintains patient records to include all required documentation, legibly written, and completed within assigned time frames.
  • Assists other staff members in patient care activities.
  • Completes discharge summaries in a timely manner, in accordance with current policy.
  • Complies with standards set forth by TJC and other regulating agencies.
  • Consults with other departments to improve quality and efficiency of patient care.
  • Coordinates Occupational Therapy treatment with other hospital personnel as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates dependability on the job. Reports to work on time. Notifies supervisor of unscheduled absences as soon as possible. Organizes work schedule effectively.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Participates in in-service educational programs.
  • Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities as requested.
  • Performs clerical duties as assigned.
  • Performs other activities as assigned.
  • Practices good communication skills with patient and family members.
  • Supervises therapy aides in accordance with established guidelines.

Compliance Statement

Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.
