Job Description

The COTA provides school-based occupational therapy services to support the implementation of a student's individualized education plan (IEP) to assist students with disabilities in areas such as fine motor skills, sensory motor processing skills and activities of daily living skills to support the student in their least restrictive environment in an educational setting as well as on job sites and/or out in the community.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Implementation & Planning of Services:

Assist in implementing the treatment programs or portions of programs as planned.

Assist students with occupational therapy.

Assist in the collection of information needed to evaluate student performance.

Assist in formulating goals for occupational therapy services.

Prepare and maintain student progress reports and other pertinent information as directed by the occupational therapist.

Attend parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings and other meetings as directed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Classroom Management:

Manage classroom behavior and ensure a positive and productive learning environment.

Uphold school policies and procedures, including attendance and student discipline.

Adaptability:

Be available for daily assignments as scheduled by the school administration and supervising occupational therapist.

Adapt to different teaching environments, subjects, and grade levels, often on short notice.

Collaboration:

Communicate effectively with teachers, providing feedback about student performance and information about the generalization of skills.

Work with supervising occupational therapist to stay informed about student needs, plan for service implementation and upcoming meetings.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education & Certification:

An associate's degree or higher in an occupational therapy assistant program from an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) certified is required.

Successfully passed the national certification examination administered by the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and Vermont state license requirement.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of federal, state and district rules, regulations and policies related to the job function.

Knowledge of the adaptive equipment or devices used to support students receiving occupational therapy.

Experience:

Previous experience working in a school setting and supporting job skills for secondary students preferred.

Previous experience implementing therapy services to support student IEP goals preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff and community businesses.

Ability to prioritize and schedule time efficiently.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Possesses a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Ability to stand and move around for extended periods.

Possible need to lift or move classroom materials.

Flexibility with daily or weekly schedules as assignments may vary based on school needs.
