Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Speech Language Pathologist - Itinerant

Minimum Requirement: Meets certification requirements as defined by the WV Dept. of Education.

Immediate Supervisor: Building Principal

Supervises: Students

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Speech Pathologists are responsible for the following:

1. Implementing his/her program.

2. Fostering a climate conducive to learning.

3. Demonstrating clinical competency in the area of communication disorders.

4. Maintaining and upgrading his/her professional skills.

5. Promoting and maintaining positive relationships among parents, school personnel and students.

6. Maintaining professional work habits.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

The following performance standards relate to the responsibilities listed below:

1. Implementing his/her program:

Respond to student's questions with appropriate explanations.

Utilize Courses of study, IEP objectives and manuals currently available in appropriate areas.

Be knowledgeable of IEP objectives for the students.

Develop plans that address the IEP objectives.

Utilize assignments to effectively stimulate student mastery of IEP objectives

Administer testing in the areas of speech, language, and hearing.

Measure student progress in regard to mastery of IEP objectives in programs of study.

Assess student accomplishments on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.

2. Fostering a climate conducive to learning:

Motivate students to become active participators.

Follow county discipline plan.

Strive to motivate students.

Establish a good rapport with students.

Exhibit mature judgment in dealing with students.

Display self control.

Provide for the comfort and safety of students.

3. Demonstrating clinical competency in the area of communication disorders:

Prepare thorough plans for each IEP objective.

Demonstrate appropriate use of instructional materials/tools, and/or equipment.

Use community resources effectively.

Employ a variety of appropriate instructional techniques.

Provide for individual difference of students.

Encourage students to assume responsibility and be cooperative.

Plan carefully to meet both long-term and short-term goals.

Uses time effectively.

Participate in School Based Assistance Team meetings.

Participates in Placement Advisory Committee meetings.

Inform parents oiua periodic and continuing basis of student therapy status and behavioral performance.

Recognize students with special problems and make referrals to specialists.

4. Maintaining and upgrading his/her professional skills:

Accept and use innovative programs and methods.

Maintain and upgrade professional skills by involvement in the following: staff development, reading professional

articles, advance degrees, research, professional associations, and professional conferences.

5. Promoting and maintaining positive relationships among parents, school personnel, and students:

Attend and conduct informational conferences.

Work cooperatively with parents.

Demonstrate frankness and diplomacy in written and oral communications with parents.

Work cooperatively with administration.

Attend star! meetings.

Maintain productive pupil-pathologist relationships.

Use discretion and consideration in speaking of school and colleagues.

6. Maintaining professional work habits:

Submit reports with accuracy and promptness.

Be punctual for classes and meetings.

Comply with school, county and state policies and regulations.

Respect confidentiality of school records and related information.

Demonstrate professional attitude by responding to suggestions and constructive criticism in a positive manner.

Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or

requested to do so under reasonable terms.

Other responsibilities:

Develops and implements Individual Education Plans (EEP) as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid state certification requirements licensing the individual to work in the specialization,

pursuant to WV Code l SA-3-2; Criminal background check conducted pursuant

to WV Code 18-5-1 Sc and/or 1SA-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications

outlined in WV Code l 8A-3-2a.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read

handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the

individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and

other staff members.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an

employee encounters while perfonning the essential functions of this job. Reasonable

accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perfonn the

essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor

settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is

low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/

technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
